A section of railway in the West Midlands is undergoing major repairs after suffering significant damage during the devastating Stourbridge fire.

The fire began on Thursday and affected around 40 acres of land, according to West Midlands Fire Service.

The affected area included part of the railway line between Stourbridge Junction and Hagley.

Nineteen properties across five streets were destroyed in the blaze. A further 18 homes were damaged.

Network Rail said the railway suffered major damage to its signalling equipment, telephone lines and lineside fencing.

Repair work began on August 17 as teams assessed the damage and started restoring the railway infrastructure.

Network Rail said it is aiming to reopen the line between Stourbridge Junction and Hagley on August 22. However, the scale of the damage means the repair operation will take time.

Teams are continuing work to restore the railway and ensure the route can safely reopen to passengers.

The railway line provides an important transport connection for communities around Stourbridge and Hagley.

Its closure is therefore affecting local passengers and residents travelling through the area.

Denise Wetton, of GBR West Midlands, thanked customers for their patience while repairs continue.

She also expressed sympathy for residents affected by the fire.

Wetton said her “thoughts remain with those impacted by these devastating fires”.

She added: “We know how important this line is for local communities and are doing all we can to help Stourbridge residents and reopen the railway as soon as possible.”

The railway damage forms part of the wider disruption caused by the fire.

West Midlands Fire Service said the blaze affected homes, land and local infrastructure across the area.

Emergency services have been responding to the consequences of the fire while repair teams work on damaged infrastructure.

For rail passengers, reopening the line will be an important step towards restoring normal transport services.

Network Rail’s target date is August 22, although reopening will depend on repair progress and safety checks.

The organisation has not said that the target date guarantees the line will reopen.

Passengers should check the latest travel information before travelling through the affected area.

Repair teams are expected to continue working until the necessary infrastructure has been restored.

The railway operator has acknowledged the disruption caused to passengers and local communities.

The repair operation highlights the wider impact the Stourbridge fire has had on the area.

As residents begin recovering, efforts are continuing to repair damaged homes, land and essential infrastructure.

The planned railway reopening could provide an important step towards restoring connectivity for the local community.
