A man accused of harassment during heavy rainfall in Karachi’s Jamshed Town has been arrested after a video of the incident went viral.

The suspect has been identified as Hafiz Mohibullah.

The video captured chaotic scenes of flooded streets where vehicles had broken down and people were wading through knee-deep water.

Amid the commotion, the man stood beside his motorcycle and took advantage of the situation to inappropriately touch a woman passing by.

The footage quickly spread across social media and triggered outrage.

Many users demanded immediate action from the authorities.

Several people criticised bystanders for remaining silent and failing to confront the man.

According to the SSP East spokesperson, police launched an investigation as soon as the footage began circulating online.

District East officers traced the man using the video evidence and arrested him shortly after, confirming that he is now in custody.

A first information report has been registered at Jamshed Quarters Police Station on behalf of the government.

Officials stated that the FIR includes sections related to sexual assault, and the suspect will be presented before a court following interrogation.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion about women’s safety in Pakistan, particularly during chaotic conditions and civic breakdowns such as flooding.

Rights activists and social commentators highlighted that public silence during such episodes reflects deep societal issues that embolden perpetrators.

They stressed that people around should have stepped in and stopped the man.

A user wrote: “No outrage from the bystanders on this, but omg wear a kurta with halwa written on it and people lose their s**t.”

Another said:

“They can’t even help a woman from harassment right in front of them?”

One remarked: “And this is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, my friends.”

Women’s rights organisations added that harassment laws must be strictly enforced.

Karachi residents expressed frustration, saying that women should not have to fear harassment while already struggling with unsafe urban conditions.

The arrest of Hafiz Mohibullah has been welcomed, but campaigners insist that real justice will only be served if the courts take firm action.

Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and the accused will soon be produced before the court as proceedings move forward.
