"She touched many lives with her kindness"
The family of a “cherished” woman have paid tribute after she was found dead in a Cardiff street.
Niwunhellage Dona Nirodha Kalapni Niwunhella, aged 32, known as Nirodha, was discovered at South Morgan Place in Riverside on the morning of August 21, 2025.
Emergency services were called at 7:37 am to reports of a seriously injured woman, but she died at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics.
South Wales Police said that 37-year-old Thisara Weragalage, from Pentwyn, has been charged with murder following her death.
He was arrested on Seawall Road in Splott shortly after Nirodha was found and was remanded in custody. He appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on August 23.
Police confirmed that the suspect was known to Nirodha.
Paying tribute, her family described her as a “cherished daughter, family member and dear friend to many”.
They said: “Nirodha will be forever remembered with peace, love and gratitude.
“She touched many lives with her kindness and warmth and her memory will continue to inspire us.
“Though her life ended too soon, the love she shared will always remain with us. Rest in peace angel.”
Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Davies, who is leading the investigation, expressed his sympathy. He said:
“My heartfelt condolences are with Nirodha’s family, friends, and loved ones as they come to terms with this tragic loss.
“We have specially trained officers supporting her loved ones at this time and ask that their privacy is respected.
“I continue to urge anyone with information who is yet to speak to officers to come forward and support our investigation.”
South Wales Police said they are seeking information about a grey Ford Fiesta that was seen near South Morgan Place or Seawall Road between 7:30 am and 8:30 am on August 21. The vehicle is believed to be connected to the investigation.
Neighbours reported hearing noise in the area that morning.
One woman told WalesOnline she heard a scream at around 7:30 am. She said she initially thought it was children before police arrived and sealed off the street.
Officers carried out door-to-door enquiries and maintained a large cordon around the scene for much of Thursday.
Investigators have urged the public to provide any CCTV, dashcam, or mobile footage that may help with enquiries.
