Ratul's sudden death has shocked fans

AK Ratul, bassist and lead vocalist of the band Owned, died unexpectedly after suffering a cardiac arrest.

The 37-year-old musician collapsed while working out at a gym in the capital’s Uttara area around 3:30 pm on July 27, 2025.

He was initially taken to Uttara Crescent Hospital, then moved to Lubana General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Ratul’s sudden death has shocked fans, fellow musicians, and friends, with tributes pouring in on social media.

The news was confirmed by lyricist Siam Ibn Alam, who has collaborated with the band since their early days together.

Ratul’s death is being mourned not only as a personal tragedy but also a significant loss for Bangladeshi rock music.

He co-founded Owned in 2007 with his brother AK Sami, aiming to create original music with powerful lyrical themes.

Their debut album One, released in 2014, earned critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase in the underground rock scene.

This success was followed by the band’s second release, Two, in 2017, which further solidified their musical identity.

As a bassist and vocalist, Ratul had a distinct style marked by emotion-driven performances and masterful musical precision on stage.

He was also known for his work as a producer, contributing to the sound development of several notable rock albums.

The three sons of the late actor Jashim, AK Sami, AK Ratul, and AK Rahul, have all been active in music.

While Sami and Ratul led Owned, their youngest brother, AK Rahul, currently plays for the heavy metal band Trainwreck.

Their father, who was one of Bangladesh’s top action film stars, passed away in 1998 following a brain haemorrhage.

Despite their father’s fame in cinema, the brothers chose music as their form of expression and collective passion.

A fan said: “Rest in peace Ratul. You will be greatly missed.”

Another wrote:

“This hurts deeply. We grew up with Owned. His voice helped me survive so many lonely nights.”

The band has yet to issue an official statement, but bandmates are reportedly devastated and mourning the loss privately.

His namaz-e-janaza was held at the park mosque, Sector 7, after Maghrib prayers. AK Ratul was laid to rest beside his father at the Banani Graveyard.

His absence will be profoundly felt within Bangladesh’s tight-knit music community, where he leaves behind a legacy of sound.
