Designer Maria B recently introduced her much-debated ‘Palestine Pret’ collection.

It is a capsule line that aims to infuse elements of Palestinian culture and resistance into its designs.

The collection featured a range of garments, including T-shirts, two-piece and three-piece outfits, adorned with intricate prints inspired by Palestinian motifs.

This includes the black and white keffiyeh, multicoloured houndstooth patterns, and the symbolic watermelon representing Palestine’s resilience against Israel.

One standout design from the collection integrated the map of Palestine with a cleverly merged image of a man. It was accompanied by the Palestine flag entwined with olive branches.

This particular design piqued the interest of artist Leena Ghani, who swiftly recognised it as the work of a Turkish artist.

Taking to her social media platform, Ghani highlighted the alleged plagiarism, tagging Palestine Quebec, which had featured the original artwork.

Ghani wrote: “The original design vs Maria B’s knockoff! And then she has the audacity to call herself an artist and a designer.”

As the news of the accusation circulated online, calls for accountability and support for the rightful artist reverberated across social media.

Initially silent in response to the allegations, Maria later addressed the controversy on Instagram.

The designer acknowledged the oversight in featuring the artist’s work without proper credit.

Describing it as an unintentional mistake in the fast-paced digital landscape, she expressed regret over the incident.

Maria apologised to her followers and also revealed that she had reached out to the artist.

She claimed he responded with understanding and a willingness to collaborate on efforts for Gaza.

The fashion designer also lashed out at what she deemed as “liberals foaming at the mouth”.

She defended her collection as inspired by images of resistance and emphasised that she intended to raise funds for Gaza.

She clarified once again that this was without her personal gain.

Dismissing accusations of plagiarism, Maria B maintained her commitment to supporting a cause close to her heart amid the tumult of online backlash.

“Liberals try to take me down while I’m trying to help raise funds for Gaza.”

“This is Pakistan. Do nothing yourself and tear down anyone who tries to do something.”

“God is enough for me, I will never stop.”
