The suspects then threatened to leak the footage
Lahore police have uncovered a honeytrap extortion ring, arresting seven individuals, including two police officers, in connection with the criminal scheme.
The gang, which operated through social media, lured victims into their trap before blackmailing them for large sums of money.
According to officials, the gang used social media to befriend men, eventually inviting them to apartments under false pretences.
Once inside, the victims were assaulted and recorded in compromising situations.
The suspects then threatened to leak the footage unless the victims paid hefty amounts.
Authorities identified the arrested individuals as Asim, Waqas, Ahmed, Abrar, Noreen, Kiran, and Fariha.
Among them, Asim is suspected of being the leader of the gang.
The involvement of two police officers has raised serious concerns about law enforcement’s role in organised crime.
Investigators used advanced digital forensics, mobile phone tracking, and other modern techniques to trace the criminals.
During the operation, authorities recovered seven mobile phones, a pistol, handcuffs, and Rs 55,000 (£150) in cash from the suspects.
Initial findings suggest that the gang had already victimised more than 50 individuals before being apprehended.
The case came to light after a local citizen, Kamran, filed a complaint.
His report led to the registration of a formal case against the suspects.
The FIR also alleges that a polio worker was involved in the scheme and had partnered with Asim to lure victims.
News of the gang’s activities and the involvement of police officers has sparked outrage.
Many are questioning the integrity of law enforcement and the extent to which criminal elements may be embedded within the system.
Authorities have assured the public that they are conducting a thorough investigation and expect more arrests in the coming days.
The operation has highlighted the growing threat of such crimes.
This case follows another honeytrap scam exposed in September 2024 in Jhang City, where three gang members were arrested.
The group had tricked their victim by arranging a fake engagement, promising that one of the women would marry his relative.
Once the engagement was finalised, they demanded Rs 260,000 (£720) for wedding expenses, which the complainant, Arif, provided.
However, during a later meeting, Arif was served tea laced with toxic chemicals and lost consciousness.
When he woke up, he was threatened with false rape accusations if he demanded his money back or insisted on the marriage proceeding.
The suspects, identified as Shamsuddin, Razia Hajjan, and Kalsoom Bibi, were later arrested by Jhang City police.
Authorities revealed that the gang had engaged in similar extortion tactics before.
