"one of those rare tales that transcends borders"
More than 15 years after Slumdog Millionaire, a sequel might be on its way.
According to reports, Bridge7 has secured the rights to bring the story back to life.
The newly formed production company was co-founded by former Netflix executive Swati Shetty and ex-CAA agent Grant Kessman.
The ambitious project includes both a sequel and a television adaptation, though specifics, such as release dates or production schedules, remain undisclosed.
However, the return of original cast members Dev Patel and Freida Pinto remains uncertain.
Fans of the ground-breaking 2008 film are left to wonder if Patel will reprise his role as Jamal Malik should a sequel be made.
His performance and character’s remarkable journey captured hearts around the world.
Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle, became a cultural and cinematic milestone upon its debut.
The narrative was woven around Jamal’s participation in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
The film used each quiz question to reveal pivotal moments from his life – his struggles, his relationships, and his rise from poverty.
Anchored by powerful performances, including Anil Kapoor’s role as Prem Kumar – the charming yet corrupt game show host – it struck an emotional chord.
The unique storytelling captivated audiences globally, contributing to the film’s massive success at the box office, where it grossed approximately £297 million.
Critics also lauded the film, earning it a stellar 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Its triumph was cemented during the awards season, where Slumdog Millionaire swept the Oscars with eight wins.
This included Best Picture, Best Director for Danny Boyle, and Best Original Score by AR Rahman.
The film also collected BAFTA and Golden Globe awards, solidifying its place in cinema history.
Reflecting on the film’s legacy, Shetty and Kessman emphasised its enduring resonance, remarking:
“Certain stories linger with you long after the credits roll.”
“Slumdog Millionaire is one of those rare tales that transcends borders and cultures, blending heart and entertainment in a way few films have managed.”
The reported sequel aims to reintroduce this iconic story to a new generation while exploring its themes through fresh perspectives.
Paul Smith, Celador International chairman, said:
“I’m delighted that Swati and Grant have chosen the Slumdog sequel to launch their newly formed company.
“Celador looks forward to working with Bridge7, as the next chapter of Jamal’s journey of discovery unfolds on the screen.”
