"So many children sing my songs so beautifully. "

The power of social media unleashed, Ranu Mondal, a singer who once sang on an Indian railway platform and helped transform her into a Bollywood singer after people heard her sing Lata Mangeshkar’s iconic song ‘Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai’ from the film Shor (1972).

Mondal has been taken under the wing of singer, actor and music producer, Himesh Reshammiya, who recorded her vocals for his the film Happy Hardy and Heer.

She has also appeared on numerous television reality shows performing songs and gaining more recognition.

With this overnight sensational fame for Mondal, Lata Mangeshkar did not comment on the singer or her success, based on Mondal singing Lata Ji’s songs.

However, Mangeshkar broke her silence in an interaction with IANS. When she was asked about Mondal, she responded with enthusiasm for her success but with caution.

“Agar mere naam aur kaam se kissiko bhala hota hai toh main apne-aap ko khush-kismat samajhti hoon.

(If anyone gets benefited from my name and work then I feel fortunate).”

But then she questioned the sustainability of an artist who just sang songs of other popular Bollywood singers, saying:

“But I also feel imitation is not a reliable and durable companion for success. By singing my songs or Kishoreda’s (Kumar), or (Mohd) Rafi Saab’s, or Mukesh Bhaiyya or Asha’s (Bhosle) numbers, aspiring singers can get short-term attention. But it won’t last.”

She further elaborated on the point when it came to the many singers of television reality shows and said:

“So many children sing my songs so beautifully.

“But how many of them are remembered after the first flush of success?”

“I only know of Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal.”

Lata Ji then gave a comparison between herself and her sister, the illustrious Bollywood singer Asha Bhonsle, and said:

“If Asha (Bhosle) had not insisted on singing in her own style she would have remained in my shadow forever. She is the biggest example of how far individuality can take one’s talent to.”

Therefore, encouraging Ranu Modal to develop her own individual style of singing to gain longevity and further respect.
