her husband frequently insulted her for being “too thin".
An Indian man was arrested after his 25-year-old wife died by suicide, allegedly due to his relentless verbal and psychological abuse.
The woman was allegedly tortured due to her physical appearance and inability to secure a job.
The incident occurred on January 30, 2025, in Kerala’s Malappuram district.
It led to the arrest of her husband, Prabhin, a male nurse at Manjeri Medical College.
Police registered a case against him for abetment to suicide and cruelty towards a married woman.
Vishnuja, who married Prabhin in May 2023 in an arranged marriage, reportedly faced humiliation and pressure from the start.
According to her father, Vasudevan, her husband frequently insulted her for being “too thin”.
Prabhin also refused to let her ride his bike, claiming she was too unattractive.
He also pressured her to find a job, stating she could not depend on his salary.
Despite attempting several exams, she was unable to secure a job.
The family claimed that Prabhin’s abuse extended beyond verbal insults.
Her friends later revealed that he monitored her conversations by linking her WhatsApp to his phone. To avoid detection, she resorted to using Telegram to communicate about her distress.
One of her friends disclosed that she had urged Vishnuja to leave her husband and return to her parental home.
After her death, her family expressed suspicion that it may have been a case of murder rather than suicide.
Her father accused Prabhin of killing her and staging her death as a suicide.
He also claimed that Prabhin’s family supported his abusive behaviour, making life even more difficult for their daughter.
Kerala police have charged Prabhin under Sections 85 and 108 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhitha (BNS).
Authorities continue their investigation into the case.
This tragic incident closely resembles another case in Kerala’s Kondotty, where a 19-year-old student, Shahana Mumthas, reportedly died by suicide.
It happened on January 14, 2025, due to harassment by her husband over her complexion.
In both cases, the women suffered humiliation and abuse within days of marriage.
Vishnuja’s family is demanding justice, calling her husband a “dangerous criminal” and urging authorities to ensure strict punishment.
Her father, devastated by her loss, emphasised that she was a strong woman who had supported her family in difficult times.
However, she never told them the details about her torment but tragically suffered in silence within her marriage.
