The South Carolina Governor, Nikki Haley has chosen to be the new United Nations Ambassador by President-elect Donald Trump.

The 44-year-old is the first ever Indian-American to serve as a United States governor. She is also the first woman to govern South Carolina.

On Wednesday, Trump said Haley had accepted the position. Haley herself has said:

“Our country faces enormous challenges here at home and internationally, and I am honoured that the President-elect has asked me to join his team and serve the country we love as the next Ambassador to the United Nations.”

Although, Haley has little experience in foreign policy. But, President-elect Donald Trump is happy with his decision.

Trump said of Nikki Haley:

“Governor Haley has a proven track record of bringing people together regardless of background or party affiliation to move critical policies forward for the betterment of her state and our country.”

The governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley was born to Indian-Sikh immigrants. Her birth name is Nimrata Randhawa.

The 44-year-old has since converted to Christianity. However, out of respect for her parents’ culture, she still attends Sikh religious events. Her husband is Army National Guard Captain Michael Haley and they have two teenage children.

Haley’s selection to be the UN Ambassador may be considered a little shocking.

The governor has not been very supportive of Trump’s previous electoral campaign. She definitely did not approve of his proposed ban on Muslims.

Trump choosing Nikki Haley may seem a little odd. But, the New York Times reports that in a CNN interview, Haley revealed that she was merely acting as a governor in her role. She insisted there was a friendship between them. Haley said:

“I have disagreements with other presidential candidates. There’s lots of things, but I will say tone matters, message matters and responsibility matters.”

Her appointment in this role will require her to represent the US and its interests to the UN. She will be a cabinet member and will be keeping the president up-to-date of all UN activities and recommend actions.

Haley will have a permanent veto power on the UN Security Council.
