Without him, the five-time champions struggled
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya was fined Rs. 12 lakh (£10,000) for maintaining a slow over-rate during the IPL match against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 29.
This was Mumbai’s first offence of the season under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate violations.
A statement read: “As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was fined Rs 12 lakhs.”
Mumbai Indians suffered their second defeat of the season, losing by 36 runs to Gujarat Titans in Match 9 of IPL 2025.
Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj delivered crucial spells to help Gujarat secure their first win of the tournament.
Hardik Pandya had already missed Mumbai’s opening match against Chennai Super Kings due to a suspension for an over-rate offence in IPL 2024.
Without him, the five-time champions struggled to post a competitive total and lost by four wickets.
This is the first instance in IPL 2025 of a captain receiving a fine for a slow over-rate.
Gujarat Titans produced a well-rounded performance to defeat Mumbai. Batting first, they posted 196/8, led by Sai Sudharsan’s 63 off 41 balls.
Later, Prasidh Krishna used slower deliveries to pick up crucial wickets, while Siraj’s scrambled seam deliveries helped him claim two dismissals. Mumbai were restricted to 160/6 in their 20 overs.
The match also saw a heated staredown between Hardik and Gujarat’s spinner R Sai Kishore.
The face-off was so furious that Hardik even appeared to yell “f**k off” to his opponent.

But after the match, the players could be seen hugging and sorting things out.
Mumbai Indians, currently ninth in the standings without a win, will next face defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on March 31.
After the defeat, Hardik Pandya said:
“I think in batting and bowling we were 15-20 runs short in both places.”
“We were not professional in the field, we made basic errors and that cost us 20-25 runs and in a T20 game that is quite a lot.
“They (GT openers) batted brilliantly, only a couple of deliveries here and there.
“They were quite exceptional, they didn’t take many chances, they did the right stuff, they were able to get runs without playing many risky shots.”
