“It's not only the business community suffering"

Senior journalist Hamid Mir has taken a stand in response to the recent internet issues and firewall installation in Pakistan.

He has challenged these actions in the Islamabad High Court. His action comes after countless cries following the internet disruption.

Represented by his lawyer Imaan Mazari, Mir filed a petition, naming the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) and the Ministry for Human Rights.

He sought to address what he perceived as a violation of citizens’ fundamental rights.

Hamid Mir also addressed the issue on X, saying:

“I filed a petition today in IHC through Imaan Mazari advocate against the installation of firewall that directly impacting fundamental rights of the citizens.

“It’s not only the business community suffering due to internet disruptions but every walk of life including journalists are facing problems.”

Central to the petition is a request for an injunction against the installation of the firewall.

It stresses the importance of stakeholder consultation and the protection of individual liberties in any technological measures implemented.

Furthermore, the petition advocates for the recognition of internet access for livelihood purposes as a fundamental human right under the Constitution.

It underscores the indispensable role that online connectivity plays in today’s digital economy.

Mir’s petition also called for transparency and accountability, urging the court to demand a detailed report on the firewall installation from the relevant authorities.

The petition highlighted the adverse impact of the internet slowdown on the youth, a demographic crucial to the digital landscape and economic progress.

He has emphasised the urgency of addressing these issues to safeguard both individual freedoms and national prosperity.

The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology, led by Palwasha Khan, has also taken notice of the disruptions caused by the internet service slowdown.

Senator Afnan Ullah Khan’s revelation that freelancers and digital agencies have suffered significant financial losses further underscores the far-reaching consequences.

As the legal battle unfolds and stakeholders continue to advocate for a fair and open internet environment.

The outcome of Hamid Mir’s petition stands to shape the future of internet governance in Pakistan.

It will set a precedent for the protection of digital rights and freedoms in the modern age.

Meanwhile, debates surrounding internet freedom and accessibility in Pakistan are still ongoing.

A user said: “At first, the introduction of new technology often brings challenges.

“However, this doesn’t mean we should retreat; instead, we should focus on finding solutions to these problems.”

Another wrote: “I do agree that net is very slow, need to improve and shouldn’t be given punishments to people of Pakistan for the pets were fed by the establishment.

“However, those running campaigns against the state must be held accountable. Let the state handle security matters.”
