"Pakistan isn’t a safe place to camp alone"
A German tourist, 27-year-old Berg Florian, was mugged near Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore.
The robbery prompted local authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the incident.
It occurred in the northern Cantt area while Florian was camping near the airport, resting in his tent around 1:30 am.
Florian was approached by two unidentified assailants who demanded cash and began rummaging through his belongings.
When he tried to escape, one of the thieves assaulted him, grabbing him by the throat and forcing him to surrender his valuables.
The robbers made off with various valuables.
These included a camera valued at £1,500, AirPods worth £230, an iPhone and Rs. 5,000 (£14) in cash.
After being robbed, Florian got on his bicycle and escaped but fainted on the way.
Some locals came to his aid and rushed him to the hospital.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered, and officials are reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to track down the suspects.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Operations Muhammad Faisal Kamran has taken notice of the incident.
He has directed the police to expedite efforts to apprehend the culprits.
This alarming incident has raised concerns about the safety of tourists in Lahore, a city traditionally known for its hospitality.
Florian, who holds a 30-day visit visa that expires on September 11, expressed his distress over the robbery.
He stressed the need for improved security measures to protect visitors.
Netizens have shared their thoughts on the incident as well.
A user said: “The government must give him back everything he lost. Show some respect and hospitality.”
Another wrote: “Unfortunately Pakistan isn’t a safe place to camp alone, especially as a foreigner.
“I wish he would have thought twice before starting his adventure.”
One commented: “Welcome to the land of flourishing growth and development and peace and harmony dear Berg.
“The best part is that all that surrounding area is Cantonment, and he got mugged.
“Dear Berg there is still time, and you are also near the airport, you can still go back.
“In fact, minus this country from your adventure spree.”
Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated one.
In April 2024, a group of Swiss embassy staff were targeted by robbers. These included a foreign national and her five companions.
They were traversing a hilly area when they were stopped by robbers. The group was forced to withdraw cash from an ATM after their phones and watches were snatched.
These incidents highlight a troubling pattern of violence, raising serious concerns about the safety of tourists.
