"I believe there is a story I want to tell."
Producer Ektaa Kapoor has officially confirmed that The Dirty Picture 2 is in development.
The announcement comes approximately fifteen years after the original film was released in December 2011.
She made the announcement during an appearance on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast.
The producer revealed that a story she wants to tell has finally prompted her to move forward with the sequel.
Ektaa kept the cast, central character and release date firmly under wraps, saying:
“One very big film I’m making is The Dirty Picture 2. I’m planning it after 15 years.
“This time, I believe there is a story I want to tell.
“The Dirty Picture was about Silk Smitha.
“It was about a woman who was condemned for standing up against her sexuality.
“Now, sexuality is about your choice.
“I never saw her as a victim.
“I saw her as someone who celebrated her sexuality, and the film did so well.”
She added that, like the original, the sequel will revolve around one person’s story.
However, she deliberately withheld any details about who that central figure will be.
The original The Dirty Picture was released in December 2011 and was inspired by the life of South Indian actress Silk Smitha.
The film starred Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor.
It traces Silk Smitha’s rise and the enormous personal challenges she faced throughout her career.
Silk Smitha appeared in more than 450 films over an eighteen-year career before she died by suicide at the age of 35.
Vidya Balan’s performance in the film earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress.
It is widely regarded as one of the finest performances in recent Hindi cinema history.
The film has remained a significant part of Vidya Balan’s personal and professional story.
In a recent interview with YouTuber Samdish, Vidya revealed that she became addicted to smoking after working on The Dirty Picture.
She said: “After The Dirty Picture, I got addicted.”
Vidya clarified that she had smoked before the film and knew how to do it technically but had not been a regular smoker.
She explained: “As a character, you can’t just fake it.
“I couldn’t have that hesitation because there is a certain perception about women who smoke.
“Much less now, far more before.”
Vidya also spoke about the initial apprehension she felt when preparing for the role.
However, she said that completing the film ultimately left her feeling “liberated,” suggesting the experience had a profoundly transformative effect.
She also revealed that being called “sexy” in response to her performance changed the way she saw herself.
The revelation that a sequel is now in active development has generated considerable excitement among fans of the original.
The news also raises immediate questions about who will lead the second film given Vidya Balan’s iconic portrayal in the original.
