"I wish I could reverse it."

In a deeply disturbing incident, a married doctor had sex with a nurse during a patient’s surgery.

The patient was sedated while the married doctor engaged in intercourse with the medic.

Aged 44, Dr Suhail Anjum and the unnamed nurse were caught in the act, which lasted eight minutes.

A “shocked” colleague saw the doctor and nurse in a “compromising position” at Tameside Hospital, Ashton-under-Lyne, England.

Dr Anjum requested a comfort break during the surgery and asked another nurse to monitor the patient.

However, he proceeded to another operating theatre at the hospital where he and the medic had sex.

During this investigation, the medic in question has been referred to as “Nurse C”.

Dr Anjum is said to have been the anaesthetist for five cases in Theatre Five on September 16, 2023.

This incident occurred during the third case, when the doctor left the room.

The colleague, who caught him and Nurse C having sex, is referred to as ‘Nurse NT”.

Andrew Molloy, representing the General Medical Council, said:

“[Nurse NT] described seeing Nurse C with her trousers around her knee area, with her underwear on display.

“Dr Anjum was in the process of tying up the cord of his trousers.

“Nurse NT was shocked and quickly walked through the theatre to the exit doors.

“Dr Anjum returned to Theatre Five and was gone for about eight minutes before his return.

‘It is right to say that no harm came to the patient when Dr Anjum was absent from the theatre and the procedure went on without further incident.”

Nurse NT reported the incident to her Line Manager.

Later, Dr Anjum admitted to engaging in sexual activity with Nurse C and that he knew she was “likely to be nearby” when he left the sedated patient.

The doctor also acknowledged the risk his actions had brought to his patient.

Dr Anjum told the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) hearing that he departed Tameside Hospital in February 2024.

Afterwards, he returned to Pakistan, where he is originally from.

Despite this, the disgraced doctor asserted his desire to resume his career in the UK, promising that his “one-off error of judgement” would never happen again.

Dr Anjum said: “It was quite shameful, to say the least. I only have myself to blame.

“I let down everybody – not just my patient and myself, but the trust and how it would look.

“I let down my colleagues who gave me a lot of respect.”

He said it was “unfair” to use his nursing colleague as cover for his action and that he had put Nurse NT in an “awkward position”.

The doctor continued: “But, most importantly, the patient.

“If my doctor had gone away without telling me, this breaks me to pieces every day when I think about it.

“I have always set very high standards for myself because the job is my passion.

“I don’t know how and why it happened, but I wish I could reverse it.

“I offer my sincere apologies to everyone involved, and I want the opportunity to put this right.”

Dr Anjum blamed the incident on a “stressful time” following the birth of his youngest child in January 2023.
