"I knew we will be late because of Shakira.”
Diljit Dosanjh revealed that Shakira had last-minute outfit issues, which caused them to arrive late at the Met Gala, sharing the moment in a behind-the-scenes video from his debut appearance.
In the YouTube video, Diljit provided a glimpse into the chaos unfolding next door, revealing that Shakira was dealing with a wardrobe emergency – a broken zipper – as he got ready for the Met Gala in his own room.
Jokingly referencing the singer’s hit song, Diljit said:
“We are suffering because of Shakira’s emergency. But it is okay… Hips don’t lie and she doesn’t lie.”
Diljit was set to hit the red carpet but his exit from the hotel was delayed due to the broken zipper, which had Shakira’s team scrambling to fix it.
Diljit continued: “They are not taking us to the main area, all the action is happening backstage itself. Takes us to the stage.
“I guess the zipper of Shakira’s broke, that’s why we are late. I knew we will be late because of Shakira.”
The BTS later showed Diljit Dosanjh entering a room where stars, including Nicole Scherzinger and Tessa Thompson, are having their photos done. Nicole complimented his appearance.
Diljit, who made history as the first Indian man to attend the Met Gala in a turban, also shared how he prepared for the event.
He was seen training in the gym and flashing the “11:11” symbol on his phone to the camera.
Later, the singer met with Nepalese-American designer Prabal Gurung, who created his Maharaja-inspired look.
Diljit Dosanjh examined the ivory sherwani-style suit and highlighted the Punjabi alphabet on the back of his cap, calling it the standout feature of the outfit.
Speaking about the collaboration, Prabal said:
“I love his work. He is one of the biggest Indian stars who has been able to crossover in the western world without compromising on who he is.
“He is true to his identity. All my friends, even the goras love him.”
Diljit confidently replied: “Our attire is going to be the best.”
The outfit paid tribute to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala.
Because he was dressed in heavy jewellery, Diljit joked:
“We would have won if this was a fancy dress competition.”
Reflecting on the global stage and his cultural roots, he said:
“I am trying to bring Punjab to the Met Gala red carpet.”
He also commented on the growing attention to Indian and Punjabi culture worldwide.
“I feel it is late. This should have happened much earlier.”
“Many artistes tried, but things happen on their own time. Our culture is very rich. Many inspirations have been taken from India and recreated all over the world.”
When asked who he was excited to meet at the event, Diljit said:
“Don’t take me wrong, but I am excited that everybody will be looking at me.”
The BTS video has been widely shared across social media, drawing praise for Diljit Dosanjh’s humour, honesty, and proud celebration of Punjabi identity on one of fashion’s most-watched nights.
