“Any younger because I seen that one.”
Caretaker Jaswent Rai, aged 47, of Stretford, Greater Manchester, received a suspended sentence after he was caught sharing indecent images of children on Instagram.
Manchester Crown Court heard the offences came to light whilst the National Crime Agency and US authorities were jointly looking into the exploitation of children.
Ben Knight, prosecuting, said:
“A category A image had been uploaded to Instagram by this defendant.
“The Instagram account was linked to his phone, and the IP address was linked to his premises in Manchester.
“This first occurred on December 10, 2019, then surprised authorities when it appeared again on December 13.
“It was equally readily traceable to the location of this defendant.”
Category A images are categorised as the most explicit type heard before the courts.
Officers searched Rai’s address and seized a number of electronic devices, including his mobile phone.
Officers found 120 indecent images, including 36 category A images on the phone as well as 53 images of extreme pornography.
The children depicted in the images were said to be aged between six and nine years old.
The images of extreme pornography depicted acts of bestiality.
Two laptops were also seized, one of which had 846 illegal images and the other contained 19 illegal images.
Rai’s internet history showed he had searched ‘underage child porn’, ‘animal farm porn’, ‘rape’ and ‘incest’.
Mr Knight explained that Rai had also engaged in sex chats on the messenger app, Kik, where he shared the indecent images with others.
In the chats, Rai had asked another paedophile:
“Have you any kids sex videos?”
Mr Knight said that the person sent Rai images that were not indecent. Rai replied by sending him a category A image and saying:
“Any younger because I seen that one.”
Rai pleaded guilty to offences of making indecent images, distributing indecent images and possession of extreme pornography.
He was said to have eight previous convictions for 17 offences, none of which were of a sexual nature.
It was said that Rai worked as a caretaker but was in a situation where he was not a risk to children or young adults.
In mitigation, Recorder Ciaran Rankin said that while the custody threshold had been crossed, a court order would be more appropriate in supporting Rai.
Anna Chestnutt, defending, said that her client would be eligible for unpaid work as he has a manual job.
She said: “Your Honour has put my client in the best possible situation so I don’t seek to address you further.”
The judge said:
“There was quite an obvious trail leading to your account.”
“You have shown little insight into the impact of your offending in the presentence report and your offending quite obviously threw lives into disarray.
“Your timely guilty plea and that you have nothing of a sexual nature on your criminal history and the fact there has been a significant delay mean that the sentence can be suspended.”
Manchester Evening News reported that the caretaker received an 18-month sentence, suspended for two years.
He was ordered to complete the Maps for Change programme, 10 days of rehabilitation activity requirements and 150 hours unpaid work.
Rai must also pay £425 in court costs, ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ register and was made the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
