“It was probably the most personal thing we’ll get to make.”
Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff take the lead in a heartwarming new rom-com, A Nice Indian Boy, with the first trailer being released.
Directed by Roshan Sethi, the film explores love, cultural expectations, and family dynamics with humour and depth.
The trailer for A Nice Indian Boy centres on the evolving relationship between Karan’s Naveen and Jonathan’s Jay.
In the trailer, soft-spoken doctor Naveen explains to Jay:
“My parents are super liberal.
“Just don’t bring up drinking or sex. And no displays of physical affection.”
Things get complicated when Jay, a White man adopted and raised by Indian parents, finally meets his boyfriend’s Indian parents — who didn’t know about the adopted part.
Upon meeting Jay, Naveen’s mother Megha (Zarna Garg) says:
“We think it’s wonderful that you’re White.”
Deadpool star Karan called the project deeply personal as his real-life partner is the director:
“It was probably the most personal thing we’ll get to make.”
Jonathan added: “Even though there was a stark difference in culture, it was so heartwarming to see that families are families, no matter what culture you’re in.”
Sunita Mani plays Naveen’s “seemingly perfect” sister.
The synopsis explained: “The Gavaskars are outwardly accepting of Naveen’s sexuality but have never had to confront it in practice.”
Naveen ends up “caught between who he is with his family and who he is outside of it”.
The film, based on Madhuri Shekar’s play of the same name, captures the nuances of identity and belonging.
Executive producers include Mindy Kaling and Justin Baldoni.
The cast features Sunita Mani, Zarna Garg, Harish Patel, Peter S Kim, and Sas Goldberg.
Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff’s chemistry drives the narrative, offering an authentic and heartfelt portrayal of love that transcends cultural barriers.
The film debuted at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival and was later screened at the BFI London Film Festival.
It has already generated buzz for its refreshing take on South Asian representation in Western cinema.
With A Nice Indian Boy set for theatrical release on April 4, 2025, it marks an important moment for diverse storytelling in Hollywood.
As audiences seek more authentic narratives, this queer rom-com promises to deliver a blend of humour, warmth, and cultural resonance.
Meanwhile, Karan Soni will next appear in the thriller Fade to Black while Jonathan Groff returns to Broadway in Just in Time, opening on April 23.
