Until Dawn remake
Released: October 4
Until Dawn pays tribute to classic slasher films.
This horror game puts players in control of eight young adults struggling to survive the night on Blackwood Mountain.
This interactive horror experience hinges on the butterfly effect – every choice you make can determine whether some, or all, of the characters live or die.
Originally released in 2015 for PlayStation 4, the remake features enhanced visuals, new camera controls, and reworked sections, including a hint at a potential sequel.
Supermassive Games, the creators of Until Dawn, have since developed several similar titles, such as The Dark Pictures Anthology, The Quarry and more recently, The Casting of Frank Stone.
For gamers who are new to the horror gaming genre and want to enjoy a fright during Halloween, Until Dawn remains the best starting point.
Silent Hill 2 remake
Released: October 8
Silent Hill 2 is a PlayStation 2 survival horror classic and the story has been revived in this remake.
Gamers control James Sutherland on his eerie journey to the fog-shrouded town of Silent Hill, following a letter from his deceased wife.
Although there were initial concerns about whether it would meet the high bar set by Konami’s 2001 original, the game has received rave reviews.
Developer Bloober Team has successfully updated the terrifying experience with modern over-the-shoulder gameplay while preserving the unsettling atmosphere.
If you are looking for a new game to enjoy during the spooky season, Silent Hill 2 is a must-play.
A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead
Release Date: October 17
Set within the film’s established canon, this spin-off follows asthmatic college student Alex Taylor as she navigates a post-apocalyptic world alongside her boyfriend, Martin.
Developed by Stormind Games, the creators of the well-received Remothered horror series, this title might exceed expectations.
The game delivers visually impressive environments and incorporates stealth mechanics.
This includes a handheld device that monitors sound levels as you attempt to evade the terrifying noise-sensitive monsters.
Fear The Spotlight
Release Date: October 22
With its retro-inspired 3D graphics, this third-person horror adventure taps into the growing wave of 90s PlayStation nostalgia.
In Fear The Spotlight, you control Vivian and Amy as they sneak into their school after hours, solving puzzles and unravelling the dark secrets behind a decades-old tragedy.
What makes this upcoming release particularly notable is that it marks the debut title from Blumhouse’s new gaming division, a company known for horror films like M3GAN and Insidious.
This game will serve as a key test for the studio’s foray into the gaming world, and so far, it looks highly promising.
Forest Hills: The Last Year
Release Date: October 22
If you’re still up for more asymmetrical horror games like Dead by Daylight, there’s a new contender in this multiplayer slasher.
Similar to others in the genre, players can either take on the role of one of five ‘Displaced’ survivors or become the Fiend, a supernatural killer.
The game has a turbulent history, starting as Last Year: The Nightmare, which was pulled from Steam after its original developer, Elastic Games, went bankrupt.
It was later revived by Undaunted Games, who re-released it in 2023.
Now revamped again as Forest Hills: The Last Year, this upcoming release comes with extra content in hopes of making it stick.
It might be worth waiting for its release to see if this horror game lives up to the hype.
No More Room in Hell 2
Release Date: October 22
Created by Torn Banner Studios, best known for the Chivalry series, this eight-player co-op game brings a Left 4 Dead vibe, featuring zombie-slaying action across a massive, dynamic map.
The game’s origins date back to 2013, when it was first developed as a Half-Life 2 mod by Lever Games, which was later acquired by Torn Banner.
The catch is that it’s only launching in early access in October 2024, meaning players can get a taste of the game this Halloween.
But the full release may still be a ways off.
In the meantime, the original version remains available to tide fans over.
Clock Tower: Rewind
Release Date: October 29
Originally released exclusively in Japan on the SNES, this updated version finally introduces the classic 16-bit survival horror game to Western audiences.
It will now include content from 1997’s Clock Tower: The First Fear on the PS1.
While relatively unknown outside of Japan, this point-and-click horror title has had a significant influence on the genre, particularly in its home country.
The story centres around solving puzzles while being relentlessly pursued by the menacing Scissorman, forcing you to hide and escape to survive.
For purists, the original game is available in its full form, but the revamped version adds a rewind mode with a more aggressive Scissorman, along with bug fixes and other quality-of-life enhancements, all overseen by 2D specialist WayForward.
Alan Wake 2: The Lake House
Release Date: October 2024
The sequel to Alan Wake received positive reviews for its story, graphics and atmosphere.
Following Night Springs, The Lake House is the second and final piece of DLC.
The Lake House appears to have deeper connections with Remedy’s other game Control.
While Night Springs leaned into the sillier aspects of Alan Wake 2, the trailer for The Lake House suggests a shift toward full-on horror, fitting for the Halloween season.
In this DLC, you play Kiran Estevez, an agent from the Federal Bureau of Control, as she investigates the mysterious Lake House in a story that runs parallel to the events of the main game.
This horror DLC is expected to be released in October 2024 to coincide with Halloween but an exact release date has not been announced.
