“This is not happening with me for the first time."

Akshay Kumar has given his thoughts on his ongoing run of box office flops.

The actor – who delivered five film flops in 2022 – has begun 2023 with Selfiee, however, the film has had a poor opening.

Selfiee also stars Emraan Hashmi and was released on February 24.

Although the film has received fairly positive reviews, it collected just Rs. 2.5 Crore (£252,000) on its opening day, making it one of Akshay’s worst-performing films of all time.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh called the opening “disastrous”.

The opening box office figure was also compared to Pathaan‘s opening, which was over Rs. 27 Crore (£2.7 million).

Akshay’s last box office success came in 2021 with Sooryavanshi. The film amassed Rs. 294 Crore (£29 million).

Akshay has had six films since then but all of them have grossed far less than the budget.

The actor has now opened up on his run of box office flops and revealed who is to blame.

Speaking about previous instances where consecutive films have flopped, Akshay said:

“This is not happening with me for the first time. In my career, I have had 16 consecutive flops at a time. There was a time when I had eight films in a row that did not work.

“Now, I have had three-four films in a row that did not work.

“A film not working happens due to your own fault.

“The audience has changed, you need to change, you need to dismantle yourself. You have to start again because the audiences require to see something else.”

Akshay Kumar dubbed his current run as a “great alarm”, admitting that no one is to blame but himself.

He continued:

“When your films flop in a row, it is an alarm for you that it is time for you to change.”

“I am trying to change, that is all I can do. (But) do not blame the audience or anyone else. It is my fault, 100%.

“Your film failing is not because of audience. It is because of what you selected. Maybe you have not given the right ingredients in the film.”

Like 2022, Akshay Kumar has a number of films releasing in 2023.

After Selfiee, he has OMG 2 – Oh My God! 2, an untitled remake of Soorarai Pottru, Capsule Gill and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.

Akshay also has a cameo in the upcoming Marathi film Vedat Marathe Veer Daudale Saat.
