"Now this is a first... welcome to the world Pakora!"

Twitter and Facebook were flooded with memes after a Northern Irish couple named their newborn baby ‘Pakora’.

The unique name came to light after a restaurant announced the heartwarming news.

The Captains Table is a famous restaurant in Newtownabbey. The restaurant took to social media to announce that a couple who frequently dine at the restaurant has named their new arrival after a dish at their restaurant.

The restaurant shared a picture of the baby and wrote:

“Now this is a first… welcome to the world Pakora! We can’t wait to meet you! Xx.”

The Captains Table also shared a photo of a receipt that had the names of some of the dishes that have ‘pakora’ in them.

The post went viral and social media users took to the comments section to congratulate the couple.

But many saw the funny side of things.

One said: “I am truly proud today! Baby Pakora!”

Another joked: “Does that make her granny her naan?”

Lots of social media users joked that they had also named their children after some of their favourite foods.

Sharing a picture of her two daughters, one user wrote:

“These are my two teens – Chicken and Tikka.”

Another wrote: “I love my son, Hoisin Pork Spring Roll.”

A third commented: “Aw same, I named my daughter Taco Bella.”

However, some people did not see the funny side.

One user called the new parents senseless, writing:

“My favourite things to eat during my two pregnancies were Banana Popsicles and Watermelon.

“Thank God I used the sense I was born with and didn’t name my kids after them.”

Calling the parents “selfish”, another wrote:

“Tell me you think your newborn child is a toy instead of an entire human being who has to live with that name and know that they were named after ‘her favourite food’ without telling me.

“Selfish of the parents I swear.”

A third said: “How tacky is that? God help that baby.”

Some claimed that the couple’s unique baby name was for a free meal at the restaurant.

One said: “People go to some lengths these days for a freebie.”

Another person commented: “That calls for a free order.”

One user said: “Cost of living and all that, anything for a free meal.”

After attracting attention, The Captains Table owner Hilary Braniff revealed that the whole thing was a joke.

She made the story up to “bring a little cheer to the industry” due to the rising costs and increasing energy bills.

Hilary also revealed that the baby is actually her granddaughter and her name is Grace.

She said: “I just thought I would do a post – my two favourite things in the world are chicken pakora and my baby granddaughter.

“I thought I would combine the two things for a bit of fun really.”
