Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light is gaining momentum as it enters the race for the 97th Academy Awards.
The film was not selected as India’s official submission for Best International Feature.
But it will now compete independently for all the categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
All We Imagine As Light continues to capture global attention.
The film won the prestigious Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes International Film Festival.
It has since built an impressive roster of honours.
Despite not being selected for the Oscar race, Kapadia wasn’t upset.
At the 34th annual Gotham Awards, the filmmaker expressed her joy at seeing two films from India, both by women, receiving international attention.
Payal Kapadia said: “I just think it’s really great that there are two films from India that are doing this well, and they’re both by women.”
She also said that her film has already enjoyed a substantial international platform due to its success at Cannes.
“Of course, everybody cares, it just helps that you get more distribution when you get these awards.
“Even winning at Cannes helped me get distribution in 50 countries.”
The film was named Best International Film by the Florida Film Critics Circle, adding to its growing list of achievements.
All We Imagine As Light also earned nominations at the London Film Critics’ Circle Awards.
It was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year and Film of the Year.
Additionally, All We Imagine As Light secured two Golden Globe nominations for Best Director and Best Motion Picture in a Non-English Language.
Set in Mumbai, the film delves into the complex lives of three working women, exploring themes of struggle, connection, and personal transformation.
The story revolves around nurse Prabha (Kani Kusruti), who receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, triggering a deep emotional journey.
Meanwhile, her younger roommate Anu (Divya Prabha) faces challenges in her relationship with a Muslim man (Hridhu Haroon).
Together, the two women embark on a life-changing journey to a coastal town, seeking healing and closure.
The film has not only won critical acclaim but also garnered attention from prominent figures.
Former US President Barack Obama included All We Imagine As Light on his list of favourite films for 2024.
Notably, it topped his recommendations. Sharing the list on X, Obama encouraged his followers to check out the film among others.
