"makes me feel really happy and honoured."
Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light missed out on two Golden Globes, leaving fans devastated.
The film was nominated in two categories – Best Non-English Language Film and Best Director (Motion Picture).
Emilia Perez won Best Non-English Language Film while Brady Corbet won Best Director for his work on The Brutalist.
Payal Kapadia was only the third Asian woman to be nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes.
Her film has received a lot of praise this American award season with nominations at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.
It was also the first film from India to win the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film had a belated theatrical release in India in late 2024 as it won the hearts of fans at international film festivals.
Due to the film’s international buzz, fans had strong reactions to the film’s loss at the Globes.
One said: “Watch All We Imagine As Light and then watch Emilia Perez and you’ll see how much of a ridiculous robbery it was.”
Another said: “All We Imagine As Light losing the Golden Globes reminds me of the World Cup 2023 final defeat… won everything just to lose the finals.”
A third said: “This film deserves every award, I don’t care.”
Some argued that the exposure that this film gave Indian cinema was enough of an award.
Payal Kapadia was gracious in her defeat and was all smiles throughout the ceremony, cheering on the winners.
She said in an interview at the Golden Globes: “It’s absolutely incredible.
“Ours is a very small film made with the struggles of a lot of people who put resources into making it.
“The fact that it is here with all these amazing people makes me feel really happy and honoured.”
Some fans were more positive and said: “You’ve already made history!”
Another said: “It’s heartbreaking, but honestly, I’m proud of Payal Kapadia and the film. It did what it was supposed to do- make an impact.”
One praised Payal, saying: “So proud of Payal Kapadia and her beautiful film All We Imagine As Light.
“I sit up a little straighter, with my heart feeling so full seeing her name being announced.
“Here’s to more success, audience and acclaim in the coming years.”
The film stars Kani Kusrati and Divya Prabha in the lead roles and follows the life story and struggles of two nurses Prabha and Anu.
From January 2025, it will be available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
