Bangladesh lost a cinematic icon as veteran actor Prabir Mitra passed away on January 5, 2025, at the age of 81.

His son, Sifat Islam, confirmed the news, revealing that Mitra had been battling multiple health complications before his death, including oxygen deficiency.

Mitra’s health had been deteriorating for weeks, having been admitted to a private hospital on December 22, 2024.

Despite medical efforts, his condition worsened, leading to his demise.

His first namaz-e-janaza was held on January 6, 2025, at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation.

It was followed by a second prayer at the Channel i premises.

His funeral took place in Dhaka. Mitra is survived by three sons and a daughter.

With a career spanning over 400 films, Prabir Mitra’s contributions to Bangladeshi cinema remain unparalleled.

He is known for his seamless transitions from lead roles to complex character portrayals.

Mitra’s performances in Titash Ekti Nadir Naam, Fariyad, and Charitrohin left an indelible mark on the industry.

Fellow actor Tariq Anam Khan reflected on Mitra’s extraordinary legacy, sharing his heartfelt admiration.

He said: “Prabir Mitra was an extraordinary artiste. His performances had a magic that still resonates with me.

“I can still recall watching his films as a young man and being captivated by his presence.”

The two actors shared moments on and off the screen, crossing paths frequently at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation.

Beyond his acting, Mitra was celebrated for his kindness and humility.

He maintained warm relationships with everyone, from his peers to behind-the-scenes technicians.

Khan noted: “He never held grudges or sought conflict. He had an incredible ability to win hearts with his love and respect for others.”

Mitra was a role model for his unwavering dedication to his craft and his dignified demeanour.

His long-time friend Ashraf Uddin Ahmed Uzzal shared similar sentiments, calling Mitra’s authenticity and humility unparalleled.

Uzzal said:

“He maintained genuine connections with everyone. We’ve lost not just an actor, but a remarkable human being.”

Prabir Mitra’s cinematic journey began with Jolchhobi in 1969, though the film was released in 1971.

His work in Rokto Shopoth, Angaar, and Fakir Majnu Shah remains celebrated as cinematic landmarks.

As Bangladesh mourns this irreplaceable talent, Tariq Anam Khan summarised the loss emotionally:

“We’ve lost a mentor, a friend, and a beacon of humanity. Prabir Mitra was truly one of a kind.”
