Renowned filmmaker CB Zaman, a pioneer in Bangladeshi cinema, passed away on December 20, 2024, at the age of 79.

He passed away at a hospital in Dhaka, where he had been receiving treatment for several days.

His son, CF Zaman, confirmed the news to local media, marking the end of an era for the nation’s film industry.

CB Zaman was hospitalised on December 14, 2024, after collapsing at home the previous night.

Family members discovered him disoriented and unable to speak clearly following a fall in the bathroom.

He was admitted to a hospital in Mohakhali the following afternoon, where doctors placed him in intensive care.

His son later revealed on social media that the filmmaker had suffered a heart attack.

Complications from chronic kidney disease, fluid retention around the heart, and a decline in haemoglobin levels further worsened his health.

Despite doctors’ efforts, Zaman showed no signs of improvement and was eventually placed on life support. Tragically, he could not recover.

The news of his passing was shared on Facebook by Kabirul Rana, deputy secretary-general of the Directors’ Association.

He also announced that Zaman’s funeral prayers would take place at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC).

CB Zaman’s illustrious career spanned from 1973 to 1990, during which he directed several acclaimed films.

Among them, Puroskar earned widespread recognition, winning five categories at the National Film Awards in 1983.

Other notable works included Jhorer Pakhi and Kusum Koli, his last directorial venture, which was released in 1990.

Beyond directing, Zaman showcased his talent as an actor, debuting in the film Arun Barun Kiron Mala.

He also appeared in two television commercials, leaving his mark as a versatile artist.

Zaman was married to Fatema Zaman, with whom he had a son, Chowdhury Farhaduzzam Zaman.

Over the years, he faced significant health challenges, including strokes and heart attacks, the most recent of which occurred in April 2023.

The passing of this cinematic legend has left his fans and colleagues in mourning.

Many expressed their condolences to his family.

He will be remembered not only for his exceptional contributions to Bangladeshi cinema but also for his enduring impact on the industry.

CB Zaman’s work continues to inspire filmmakers and audiences, ensuring his legacy will live on for generations to come.
