Born Charlotte Aitchison, Charli XCX has long spoken openly about her South Asian heritage and the importance of identity in her personal story.

Her mother, Shameera, is a Gujarati Muslim who fled Uganda during Idi Amin’s expulsion of Asians in the 1970s, while her father is Scottish.

Speaking to Vogue Singapore in 2024, Charli reflected on growing up mixed-race in England, describing her upbringing as living in “two half-lives.”

She recalled feeling deeply Indian when visiting her mother’s family, surrounded by Gujarati conversations, home cooking, and Bollywood films playing in the background.

Returning home felt like entering a largely white world, with her Indian identity often experienced only on weekends.

Charli said she never fully felt she fit into either world, a reality she noted is common for many mixed-race children.
