"I am hardly Bob Dylan."
The 2025 Ivor Novello Awards proved to be a successful event for Charli XCX.
With the release of her album Brat (2024), Charli has garnered widespread acclaim.
The recent ceremony added to her impressive array of accolades as the singer was crowned ‘Songwriter of the Year’.
In her winning speech, Charli XCX spoke humbly about her talent and said:
“I’m sure you all agree, I am hardly Bob Dylan.”
Speaking about the album, she added: “It’s Dennis Pop. It’s David f***ing Lynch!
‘It is an undeniable sense of style and personality.
“And of course, it’s embracing the idea of daring to suck.
“In my opinion, from writing songs with no fear and no agenda, other than making something totally reflective of who you are, come the best songs.
“Songs that can soundtrack a night out, a summer, or possibly even define a moment in time.
“So, to all the songwriters in the room – I think there are some here, but there are also a lot of lawyers, which we love!”
In May 2025, Charli XCX also opened up about her next album after Brat.
She revealed: “I don’t really feel the pressure to create another record like Brat.
“Because when I was making it, even though I really believed in it and totally knew what I wanted to do with it, I had no idea how it would be received.
“I was really doing it for myself and marketing it in the way I wanted to for myself.
“But I had no clue that people would kind of connect to it in the way that they did.”
“You can never really do the same thing twice, and my next record will probably be a flop, which I’m down for to be honest.”
The 2025 Ivor Novello Awards also saw artists including BERWYN, Orla Gartland, and Peter Fenn being awarded for their respective work.
CEO of the Ivors Academy, Roberto Neri, said: “A massive congratulations to all of our winners.
“From the UK we’re creating the global recognition that songwriters and composers deserve.
“Whether it’s fair pay, safe working environments or ensuring meaningful opt-in consent in the age of AI, The Ivors Academy exists to protect, empower and celebrate the most vital creative force in the music industry.
“I’m proud to lead an organisation dedicated to upholding the rights and earnings of our members.”
