He added that the smell made him nauseous
A Pakistani doctor and content creator named Fani is facing intense backlash for his “Why does China smell so bad?” video.
In the video, Fani described his initial experience in the country as unpleasant, claiming he encountered an “unbearable smell”.
He stated that the odour was noticeable as soon as he boarded a flight from Dubai, where many Chinese passengers were present.
He added that the smell made him nauseous and that it worsened after he landed.
Although Fani mentioned that he eventually became used to the smell, his comments caused outrage for his perceived insensitivity.
Titled Why Does China Smell So Bad?, Fani’s video went viral on Instagram, garnering over 54,000 views and widespread condemnation.
Critics labelled his remarks as disrespectful, while others deemed his comments racist.
Many users pointed out the irony in his criticism.
They pointed out that he comes from a country struggling with public hygiene issues, such as littering and public urination.
One said: “I think bro never travelled their own country Pakistan.”
Another quipped: “And he himself is from Pakistan!”
One questioned: “A Pakistani is saying this nonsense. This is exactly what people in other countries say about you guys.”

In response to Fani’s video, numerous viewers shared their positive experiences in China, refuting his claims.
A user declared: “All lies! Lived in China for more than half a decade and can say that you are lying!”
Another wrote: “We have been living in China for two years. Came to China from South Asia.
“Didn’t smell anything like that. Chinese people are hygienic.”
Some users highlighted an old video on Fani’s Instagram profile titled “Why China is Clean”, accusing him of stirring controversy merely for attention.
This dual narrative only added to the criticism, as many viewed it as contradictory.
The controversy has sparked wider discussions about the responsibilities of influencers and content creators when discussing such topics.
Critics emphasised the importance of respecting the countries they visit, especially when their platform reaches a global audience.
One person commented: “Bro don’t bad mouth any country, it’s not that we are taught to do.
“Respect the country which you are in and which gave you the opportunity to travel it.”
While Fani often shares videos about his experiences in China, his latest post has overshadowed his other content.
