"Very proud to be playing Glastonbury this year"

Nitin Sawhney and Arooj Aftab are among the leading South Asian talents at Glastonbury 2024.

The popular music festival returns to Somerset’s Worthy Farm from June 26-30.

Nitin is an award-winning musician, producer and composer.

He will be one of the performers for the West Holts Stage. Singer-songwriter and actress Asha Puthli is also part of the same slot.

The Brit announced the news on his Instagram. Sharing a poster of the event, he wrote:

“Very proud to be playing Glastonbury this year on the West Holts stage at 5:30 pm on Saturday 29th June. Fully televised…”

On social media, fans congratulated him.

One wrote: “Amazing! Look forward to watching the live stream on BBC!”

Another said: “Will be there. Looking forward to seeing you.”

It will be Nitin’s first performance at Glastonbury since 2014. First performing in 1993, Nitin has performed at the festival four times.

In 2014, he graced the famous Pyramid Stage.

Meanwhile, Pakistani singer Arooj Aftab will be a part of the Park Stage.

Having last performed at the festival in 2022, Arooj took to Instagram to announce her return, writing:

“We are back at Glastonbury June 2024.”

One fan commented: “You are remarkable.”

Another said: “I will be there.”

Nitin, Arooj and Asha will join an elite lineup of musicians including the likes of Coldplay Dua Lipa, SZA, Shania Twain and Burna Boy.

Nitin recently revealed that he suffered a heart attack, which led him to withdraw from Australia’s premier world music festival WOMADelaide.

In a lengthy post on X, he said: “A few days ago, out of nowhere, I had a heart attack. Nuts…

“I was rushed to hospital and the NHS put a stent in one of the arteries leading to my heart, after which I was kept in to await a similar operation (which I was referring to in my quoted post) on another artery.

“Both ops have gone well and the NHS were fantastic.

“I will need a third, bigger operation next month but one day at a time I reckon… I weight train 3-4 times a week, regularly kick-box, eat healthily and had no history of heart disease.

“When I spoke to the doctor, he said it was probably a genetic predisposition.

“Basically, as a British Asian, I have a significantly higher likelihood of cardiovascular disease or heart attacks.”

“My dad had a triple heart bypass, my mum has had two attacks and three of my uncles had heart attacks with one dying on the spot.”

Recalling the “terrifying feeling”, he said:

“Your chest feels like someone is sitting on your chest holding a 200kg weight and your head feels like it’s spinning out of control as you struggle to remain conscious.

“In my case, I completely blacked out, falling onto a glass ornament from a standing position, smashing the coffee table with my face as I collapsed into a pool of blood and broken shards, penetrating both cheeks, my nose and the area just beneath my eyes.”

Nitin said a plastic surgeon later “had to carefully remove pieces of glass from my face with tweezers after 4 injections to my face”.

For Arooj, her latest track ‘Sheherazaad’ was released in February 2024.

In 2023, she received the President’s Pride of Performance Award, receiving the award in the United States.
