“And we are demanding justice for women, right?"
Former Trinamool Congress MP and Bengali actress Mimi Chakraborty has revealed that she has been targeted online with rape threats.
This was after she publicly supported the ongoing protests by doctors in Kolkata.
Taking to X, Chakraborty shared screenshots of the threatening comments.
The actress expressed her outrage at the normalisation of such violence against women.
In her post, Chakraborty highlighted the hypocrisy of those who claim to stand in solidarity with women while simultaneously issuing threats.
She questioned the values and education of those who resort to such hateful behaviour, writing:
“And we are demanding justice for women, right?”
Mimi Chakraborty tagged the cybercrime division of Kolkata police, seeking intervention against the perpetrators.
The backdrop to Chakraborty’s statements is the protests led by junior doctors following the rape and murder of trainee medic Moumita Debnath at her workplace.
These protests have significantly disrupted health services across the country, reflecting the urgent call for justice and safety for medical professionals.
In response to the crisis, the Supreme Court has established a task force to recommend safety measures for healthcare workers.
The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) welcomed this initiative.
They emphasised that any decision to end the strike would be contingent upon discussions with the protesting doctors.
Recent meetings among resident doctor’s associations have yet to yield a conclusive path forward.
Chakraborty’s plight underscores the broader societal issues of violence against women and the challenges faced by those advocating for change.
Disturbing comments also emerged under Mimi Chakraborty’s posts.
One of them read: “Ask your father and brother to come home early.”
Another commented: “There was a woman involved in the crime as well. So not all men are the same. She puts the blame and then goes to bed.”
One said: “Ok fake feminist ma’am. Please stop generalising men.
“Just to satisfy your so-called ego against men, people like you brag about the safety of girls.”
“If you are so into generalising men and hating them, then start with your own father and brother.”
Chakraborty filed a complaint against the rape threats and updated her Instagram followers, writing:
“Update on the Rape threats: With the help from the Cybercrime department, FIR has been lodged regarding this.
“Those accounts have been taken down and deactivated forever.
“Police is trying to trace the main two here cause they have deleted all comments and have gone incognito.”
