Married man Farooq Miah, aged 29, of Manningham, Bradford, was jailed for six years on August 14, 2019, for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl.

Bradford Crown Court heard the “infatuated” man groomed and manipulated her by purchasing drinks, ice-cream and a gift for her. Miah also isolated her from family and friends.

Prosecutor Gerald Hendron explained that when concerns about the “relationship” were raised on a trafficking website, Miah told the girl to lie to the police.

Initially, the girl denied that Miah had sexually abused her and tried to conceal her phone from investigating officers.

But she later explained that he had met her late at night at a fast-food restaurant. He took her in his Audi to Baildon Moor.

He bought ice-cream and drinks and they smoked cigarettes.

Mr Hendron said that Miah then began touching her indecently and it led to having oral sex with her. Miah used the girl’s phone to film her performing a sex act on him.

The phone was later found by officers. It was revealed that there had been 996 calls and texts between Miah and the victim.

Miah pleaded guilty to eight counts of sexual activity with a child and one count of making an indecent image.

The girl told officers that the married man sulked if she refused to engage in sexual activity with him. In her victim impact statement, the victim said she believed Miah was in love with her at the time.

Taryn Turner, Miah’s barrister, said he admitted to all the offences and had been in custody since June 7, 2019.

However, she admitted: “This is a bad business and it is accepted that it must be marked with an immediately effective custodial sentence.”

Mrs Turner also said that her client’s wife was expecting their child.

She added: “He had an infatuation for this young girl and that led to this appalling series of offences against her.”

Miah was remorseful and felt disgusted about his actions.

The Recorder of Bradford, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC, told the court that Miah seduced a 13-year-old girl. He was aware of her age and had groomed and manipulated her.

Judge Durham Hall said:

“The girl has been deeply affected by the abuse of a paedophile.”

Farooq Miah was sentenced to six years in prison. The Telegraph and Argus reported that he must sign the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.

The judge also made him the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order until further order.

Following the sentencing, Detective Superintendent Sarah Jones, Safeguarding lead at Bradford District, said:

“West Yorkshire Police takes cases of child sexual exploitation extremely seriously and will take positive action with partners to support victims and bring perpetrators before the court.

“We hope this outcome will give others the confidence to report offences to West Yorkshire Police, knowing that they will be supported by specially trained officers who will investigate every report and take appropriate action.”
