"At her age, it is difficult to say if it was a heart attack."

An Indian girl, aged 15, died of a suspected heart attack after collapsing at her school in Vashi, Maharashtra, on August 13, 2019.

Police are waiting for a post-mortem report to determine the cause of death.

Sailee Jagtap, who was a student at Modern School, was rushed to hospital where she was declared dead on her arrival at 7:30 am.

The girl went to school in the morning where she was set to take an exam. She was due to go to the morning assembly when she collapsed.

Her classmates alerted the teachers and Sailee was taken to the hospital.

Former corporator Vaibhav Gaikwad said: “The school is conducting internal examinations. She had just kept her bag and was proceeding for the assembly around 7 am when she collapsed.

“She was rushed to Sterling Wockhardt Hospital.”

Officers at Vashi Police Station explained that she did not suffer any head injuries and have registered a case of accidental death.

One family member stated that the schoolgirl had not complained of any sickness before leaving for school. The relative said:

“We checked the school’s CCTV footage, but it did not show anyone pushing her.”

A doctor at the hospital said: “Some of her teachers brought her to the hospital. We did her physical examination as well as an ECG (electrocardiography) test, but she did not respond to anything.”

While it has been suspected that Sailee died of a heart attack, the doctor said there is no way to be sure until a post-mortem has been conducted.

“We have not been able to ascertain the cause of death. At her age, it is difficult to say if it was a heart attack.

“We don’t know if she had a history of convulsions. Her family arrived an hour later. Her mother said she had suffered from dizziness on one occasion and was taken to a doctor, but everything was found to be normal.

“Nobody could give us a definitive medical history. So we could not do anything apart from declaring her dead.”

Assistant Inspector Prabhakar Shirodkar added: “The reason for her death is unclear. We didn’t see any injury mark on her head.

“We will be able to comment further only after receiving the post-mortem report.”

The Hindustan Times reported that the school’s principal, Sumitra Bhosale, refused to comment on the death of the Indian girl.

Senior Inspector Anil Deshmukh explained that the reason for the family’s late arrival to the hospital was due to Sailee’s father being out of town. He said:

“Her father was out of town at the time of the incident. He came in the evening.”
