Police in India have arrested a man accused of posing as a British doctor and performing surgeries that allegedly caused seven deaths.

Narendra Vikramaditya Yadav, also known as Dr N John Camm, worked as a cardiologist at a missionary hospital in Damoh, Madhya Pradesh.

Police allege that the 53-year-old forged medical degrees, committed fraud and used the name of UK cardiologist Professor John Camm to boost credibility.

Yadav has denied all allegations.

A Mission Hospital official said: “Nobody suspected him of being a fake doctor. He was good at his job and acted like a big-time professor.”

He worked there for a few weeks before resigning suddenly in February 2025. That same month, a child welfare committee flagged several patient deaths to local authorities.

Deepak Tiwari, president of Damoh’s Child Welfare Committee, said:

“We got suspicious about his expertise and checked his credentials online and found that he had cases against him in at least three states.”

A criminal investigation began shortly after Yadav was arrested in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Police say he handled 64 cases at the hospital, including 45 angioplasties, and that seven of those patients died.

Shrut Kirti Somvanshi, Damoh’s police chief, said:

“The accused doctor had worked on a total of 64 cases, including 45 cases of angioplasty, which led to seven patient deaths.”

Officers suspect his medical documents are fake, as they lack a valid registration number. However, his qualifications have not been officially verified.

On the day of his arrest, Yadav sent legal notices demanding Rs. 50 million (£455,000) from people who accused him of impersonating a British doctor.

This is not the first time Yadav’s identity has raised red flags.

In a 2019 blog, he claimed to have trained in the UK under Professor John Camm and worked at St George’s Hospital in London. He also claimed to have worked in the US, Germany, Spain and Delhi.

In 2021, he posted that he was developing a 5,000-bed hospital in Rajasthan.

He wrote: “The hospital is being developed under [the] leadership of Dr N John Camm, renowned Interventional Cardiologist from Germany, and will [be] spread over 100 acres of land and will have world-class research and tissue labs.”

Public records show he registered four companies in the UK in 2018 under the name Dr Narendra Vikramaditya Yadav, later changing it to Dr Narendra John Camm.

In 2023, fact-checkers challenged his credentials after he created an X account using the name “Prof N John Camm.”

The real Professor Camm issued a statement confirming the account was fake and that someone was impersonating him.

Yadav has previously been investigated and banned by Indian authorities.

In 2014, he was banned for five years by medical regulators for “professional misconduct”, according to parliamentary records.

In 2013, he was charged with fraud and cheating in Uttar Pradesh, though a court later stayed the complaint.

In 2019, he was arrested for allegedly abducting a British doctor he had invited to work in Hyderabad.

Police are continuing to investigate the extent of the alleged fraud and any other possible victims.
