"Nothing more could be done to save him"
A man has been apprehended under suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a collision where a passenger in a stationary vehicle lost their life.
West Midlands Police reported that an Audi collided with several vehicles on Soho Road in Handsworth, around 8 pm on February 18.
The passenger, aged in his 30s, died at the scene, while two others sustained injuries, with one in critical condition.
Although the deceased individual remains unidentified, a resident mentioned he was due to be the best man at his friend’s upcoming wedding.
Additionally, one of the other victims sustained injuries deemed potentially severe.
Police confirmed that the 25-year-old driver of the Audi was hurt and taken it hospital. However, he was arrested, charged, and would be questioned later.
A West Midlands Police spokesman said:
“We’ve made an arrest after a man has sadly died following a collision in Soho Road, Birmingham, last night.
“An Audi hit a number of vehicles at around 8.20 pm. A passenger in a stationary vehicle, aged in his 30s, sustained serious injuries and tragically died.
“Two other people were taken to hospital to be treated for injuries.
“We’ve secured some CCTV and dash cam footage but remain keen to hear from anyone with information who can assist our investigation.”
In the harrowing footage, the car can be seen speeding down Soho Road, which remains one of the busiest in Birmingham, even in the evening.
As the car weaves between the lanes, it crashes into the vehicle in front.
Due to the dangerous speed, the impact of the collision was astronomical.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman described the response at the scene, saying:
“The first was a man who was a passenger in one of the cars.
“He had sustained life-threatening injuries and received advanced life support and advanced trauma care from ambulance staff at the scene.
“Unfortunately, nothing more could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased at the scene.
“A woman from one of the cars was assessed and had sustained potentially serious injuries.
“She received treatment at the scene before being conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment.
“A man who was the driver of one of the cars was assessed by ambulance staff and had sustained injuries which were not believed to be life-threatening.
“He was conveyed to Sandwell District Hospital for further assessment.”
Andy Street, West Midlands mayor, described it as “another needless death in Birmingham”.
Soho Road was temporarily closed but subsequently resumed normal operation.
Residents in the vicinity were astonished by widely circulated online videos depicting the aftermath of the accident.
Bob Balu, a prominent local business figure, characterised Soho Road as a secure locality and emphasised the infrequency of such occurrences.
Nonetheless, he elaborated on how businesses had persistently advocated for improved lighting and traffic regulations.
