the electric G-Class has a massive 116kWh battery.
A new all-electric version of the Mercedes G-Class has been unveiled.
Initially a military off-roader, the G-Class is known for its boxy appearance and is a popular motor among the rich and famous.
Commonly known as the G-Wagen, the upcoming model features a zero-emissions drivetrain and lots of new features.
The G-Class EV will be called the G580 with EQ Technology.
It is based on the traditional 4×4 ladder-frame concept.
But because the 580 is electric, four individually controlled motors located near the wheels will power this SUV with 432kW of output.
Mercedes claims: “The four individually controlled electric motors once again raises the legendary performance of our off-road icon to a new level.”
The German carmaker has also debuted several electric functions, including the ‘G-Turn’, which allows the car to turn on the spot on loose or unpaved surfaces.
‘G-Steering’ is another new function, which dramatically reduces the size of the turning circle.
The 580 also comes with low-range off-road gear reduction, gradability of up to 100% on suitable surfaces and an extra 150mm of fording depth on the fuel G-Class.
In terms of power, the electric G-Class has a massive 116kWh battery.
This is the same size as the new Mercedes EQS, which can manage 511 miles on a single charge.
But because of the G-Class’ body shape and bulk, the range is limited to just 293 miles.
Its battery is protective plated and can handle five times the weight of the car.
Maximum charging speeds go up to ultra-rapid 200kW, giving owners 0 to 80% charge in 32 minutes. And Mercedes has cleverly doubled the rear-wheel storage box case into a charging house of the 11kW onboard charging cables.
To fully charge the new electric G-Class at home at the current standard kWh price, it will cost approximately £23.
The electric G-Class will come with ‘G-Roar’, meaning it will produce synthetic sounds to add “aura” and “event”.
It takes just 4.7 seconds to reach 62 mph and has a limited top speed of 112 mph.
When it comes to looks, it is a slightly updated version of the current fuel-powered G-Class.
However, the grille is blanked-off in typical EV style, the windscreen has black framing, the front bumper vents are aero-optimised and there are of course the silver ‘EQ’ badges that signify you’re driving an electric variant.
The interior is pretty much the same as the updated G-Class.
The all-new electric Mercedes G-Class will be available in ‘Manufaktur’ paint options, all of which have a blue trim strip and blue brake callipers to hint at its electrified heartbeat.
When it is launched later in 2024, the G-Class will also come in an Edition One trim, which comes with the AMG Line and Night Package.
The price is yet to be confirmed but expect the Edition One to cost around £190,000, and future models from around £140,000.
In the electric car market, the only direct price point luxury 4×4 contender will be the soon-to-be-launched Range Rover EV – which is said to ring in close to £150,000.
