Mercedes' design is focused on ‘sensual purity as an expression of modern luxury’.
Everyone knows that the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a trendsetter when it comes to car technology and passenger comfort.
Even the likes of Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Jaguar benchmark themselves to the astonishing levels of engineering of the S-Class when it comes to the overall quality of the luxury package.
The market leading German car maker has failed to disappoint yet again with their 2015 range, oozing plenty of new tech and backseat entertainment to make this the smoothest and safest ride on the road.
DESIblitz highlights the best features from the Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2015 edition.
Interior
The 2015 S-Class boasts quite possibly the best interior of any car.
Opt for the full Rear Seats Package and you’ll get ventilated massaging and heated rear seats which recline up to 37 degrees with aircraft type leg rests.
The exquisitely crafted cabin makes fine use of premium leathers, wood and metals to make you feel like a VIP, especially in ‘ambient lighting mode’.
The gorgeous long display screens will give your chauffeur all of the valuable (and not so valuable) information needed for your journey.
Add in a fridge, folding tables, temperature controlled cup holders, 10 inch entertainment screens, in-built rear seat head cushions and you’ll wonder if there’s actually any need to ever get out!
Exterior
Although the models in this new range are bigger and heavier than their predecessors, the curvaceousness of the 2015 S-Class allows it to hide its size well.
Mercedes have definitely gone with a more sportier look especially with their AMG lines in the S63 and S65 models.
Mercedes say their design is focused on ‘sensual purity as an expression of modern luxury’.
The exterior is made of a mixed-metal aluminium hybrid shell.
The parking package with PARKTRONIC has 360 degrees of camera views as well as the all important reversing camera, which comes as standard.
LED ‘Intelligent Light System’ is used throughout as well as infrared-reflective noise cancelling glass all round to ensure you’d hear a pin drop if the floor wasn’t carpeted.
Curve illumination will monitor steering patterns on bends and detect cyclists and pedestrians ahead earlier.
Technology
Driver safety is the clearly the main focus of the new S-Class. With a list too long to go through, here are the new key tech features you need to know about:
- Night View Assist Plus ~ a thermal imaging camera detects people near the road within 160m and flashes 4 short bursts of spotlight flashes to make both driver and pedestrian aware of each other.
- Collision Prevention Assist Plus ~ using a radar sensor system, the car can automatically apply a partial brake should the distance of the vehicle ahead be too short.
- Magic Body Control ~ combining the Active Body Control (ABC) AIRMATIC air suspension system with Road Surface Scan which uses stereo cameras to scan the road ahead and lift the wheels on approaching bumps.
- Splitview ~ The front 8 inch 20cm diagonal LCD display enables the front passenger to watch a film while the driver keeps an eye on the information on COMMAND control on the same screen.
Performance and Price
There are plenty of options with models, and both V6 and V8 engines are available.
The fastest model is the S65L 4 door auto with 630 bhp, which can reach 0-62mph in a blistering 4.3 seconds. Quite nippy for a 2 tonne tank!
The most efficient model is the S500e L AMG Line 4 door auto, which emits only 65g/km CO2 while giving a very generous 100.9mpg.
On the road, prices range from £66,000 to over £180,000 with a variety of packages available in between.
There is no doubt Mercedes have done it again and produced an almost faultless and dynamic modern luxury car for many to consider selling their houses to buy one.
With more finesse and plenty of technology and engineering for its rivals to catch up with, the S-Class remains a pioneering class leader and will most likely be so for a long time to come.
