"A lot of them would write in Devanagari."

Katrina Kaif delved into the hard work she underwent to improve her Hindi in the early years of her career.

Katrina started her Bollywood journey with Boom (2003) – a box office failure.

She earned recognition with films including Namastey London (2007), Partner (2007) and Singh is Kinng (2008).

Although it is no secret that a dubbing artist was used for the Hindi lines spoken by the London-born actress, Katrina opened up about how she insisted that she did not want to use someone else’s voice.

She explained: “It’s just hard work. It was Jackie Shroff who first told me learn to read Devanagari.

“And that was very important for me because in the first few films at that time the directors would write the lines on the set and give it to you.

“A lot of them would write in Devanagari and I never wanted to be in that position where I didn’t know what to do.

“So, the first thing I did was learn to read in Devanagari and that was the base which saved me.

“There is really nothing more complex to it than that.

“And having amazing people to work with and just putting your head down and doing what was necessary.

“And loving what you do. If you love what you do, then you will put in the work whatever it was.

“Whether it was learning the language or whether it was in dance.”

Katrina Kaif is known for her dancing skills and has performed in several item numbers.

To strengthen her dancing, the actress joined an academy whose alumni also included Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

Shedding a light on this incident, Katrina continued:

“They were seniors. Priyanka was the star pupil in the class.

“The same time I was really kind of investing myself into learning Hindi was the same time when I put myself into Kathak training with my guru-ji Veeru Krishna.

“That is where I spent all my time – wake up by 6 in the morning, class would be till 12 and you would tie your ghungroos and come and knock on the door, a small room with no AC.

“It was fun. It was fun.”

Katrina is also no stranger to the schematic politics of Bollywood. She recently revealed how her role was cut from Siddharth Anand’s Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008).

The actress was scheduled to play the fourth lover of Raj Sharma (Ranbir Kapoor).

“I was the fourth girl, that character got cut.”

On the work front, Katrina Kaif was last seen in Merry Christmas (2024).
