she pleads with officers not to handcuff her
An Indian woman faced backlash after a viral video showed her crying and pleading with police officers after allegedly being caught shoplifting in the United States.
The clip shows the woman repeatedly apologising to officers and insisting she forgot to pay for the items.
Despite being told several times to turn around, she continues crying and says: “No sir, sorry. Please,” with her hands folded.
According to reports, the woman was allegedly caught shoplifting clothes at a Target store, including men’s items, which she claimed were intended for her brother in India.
In the video, she pleads with officers not to handcuff her and asks them to “give her a chance”.
Despite her reluctance, she is eventually restrained and taken to the police station.
Still crying, she asks to contact her husband, but the officers deny the request.
Reports suggest the Indian woman may face felony retail theft charges.
Authorities have not confirmed her identity, the store’s exact location, or the total value of the items. The investigation remains ongoing.
The video has drawn condemnation on social media, with many users criticising the woman’s actions and calling them damaging to the Indian community abroad.
One user wrote: “Why do they steal from the US. And from other countries where they travel. They steal from 5-star hotels and supermarkets and even jewellery shops.
“And guess these are highly educated 1% Indians who can afford foreign education and foreign travel.”
Another said: “Cases of Indians caught shoplifting abroad have sparked outrage online and led to warnings from US authorities.
“Such acts damage the reputation of the entire diaspora.”
“No amount of political symbolism or appeals can override local laws as crime is crime and legal consequences are real.”

Others were harsher in their criticism, with one person writing:
“They see large-scale looters in their own country getting clean chits, so they think stealing little stuff is not a big deal.”
Another comment read: “This begging and bribing usually works in India.
“She thinks she can get away with it by crying and begging but unfortunately, it’s not India.”
The incident has reignited debate about accountability among Indians living abroad, with many social media users urging people to respect local laws and understand that emotional appeals cannot override legal consequences.
