The chats included discussions of sedatives and electrocution.
A man thought to have died from an electric shock was allegedly murdered by his wife and her lover in a calculated plot, Delhi Police have said.
Karan Dev died on July 13, 2025, after being taken to Mata Roop Rani Maggo Hospital in Uttam Nagar.
His family claimed he had been electrocuted accidentally and requested no post-mortem. But police insisted on an autopsy due to the unnatural cause of death.
An investigating officer said: “The deceased’s brother received chats containing serious allegations and informed the police station.
“Based on the seriousness of the matter, we filed an FIR under relevant sections.”
Karan’s post-mortem was carried out at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.
Three days later, his brother Kunal provided police with screenshots of Instagram messages exchanged between Karan’s wife, Sushmita, and her lover Rahul, who is also Karan’s cousin.
The chats included discussions of sedatives and electrocution.
Police said the pair had even searched online for “time of death after 15 sleeping pills” before executing their plan.
On the night of the murder, Sushmita allegedly laced Karan’s dinner with 13 to 15 sleeping pills.
According to police sources, she said she wanted to “sleep for a while” before carrying out the murder.
Investigators believe Sushmita and Rahul waited until 5 am, when Karan was in a deep sleep, before electrocuting him.

The officer continued: “The investigation is still in its early stages.
“The motive is being further established, and more facts will be shared in due course.”
Police said they later recovered a confession video from Sushmita.
In it, she claimed Karan slapped and abused her just a day before Karwa Chauth. She also alleged he repeatedly harassed her for money.
The crime team and the Forensic Science Laboratory have examined the scene and preserved key evidence. Police have arrested both Sushmita and Rahul on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy.
Police said the pair intended to make Karan’s death appear as the result of an electrical accident.
But when the sleeping pills did not immediately result in unconsciousness, they decided to administer an electric shock, allegedly by applying current to his finger, while he was still sedated.
They hoped to attribute his death to an electrical accident in the household.
Dwarka Police confirmed the case is now under full investigation.
