"her father alleged she had been abducted"
An Indian teenager was strangled to death by her father for eloping with a man from the Dalit community.
The father, Shankar Lal Saini, confessed to the murder on Wednesday, March 3, 2021.
Eighteen-year-old Pinki Saini was already under police protection from her father, a resident of Rajasthan’s Dausa district.
Saini sought help from the Rajasthan High Court, fearing her father’s wrath due to marrying a Dalit man.
She alleged that Shankar Lal Saini had forcefully married her off on Tuesday, February 16, 2021.
However, she soon returned home before eloping with Dalit Roshan Mahawar on Sunday, February 21, 2021.
According to Superintendent of Police Anil Beniwal, the Indian father registered a police complaint on Monday, February 22, 2021, alleging his daughter’s abduction.
SP Beniwal said:
“She was married on February 16 but after returning home, she fled with her lover.
“Later, her father alleged she had been abducted, today he surrendered and said that he killed her.”
Pinki Saini and Roshan Mahawar approached the Rajasthan High Court on Friday, February 26, 2021.
The court asked the police to take them both to a safe place as “their life and liberty are in danger”.
The Indian couple returned to their village in Dausa on Monday, March 1, 2021.
However, the police said that Saini had been abducted from their home the same day.
According to a PTI report, Pinki Saini’s family members allegedly took her back home, where she was strangled to death by her father.
Advocates for the couple have described Pinki Saini’s murder as “gross negligence” and, despite a court order, could not have been prevented.
This is not the first time that an Indian father has committed murder on account of his daughter eloping.
In June 2020, a man from Haryana admitted to hacking two people to death in Rajasthan.
The murders came after 40-year-old Anil Jat discovered his married daughter Suman had run away to elope with her lover, Krishna.
Suman had eloped with Krishna on Tuesday, June 2, 2020.
Jat had previously threatened Krishna’s family if his daughter did not return home. He then travelled to Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan on Monday, June 8, 2020.
According to the police, Jat brutally murdered Krishna’s brother Deepak and his friend Naresh with an axe while they were sleeping.
Anil Jat’s arrest came on Wednesday, June 10, 2020.
According to Deputy Superintendent Gyan Singh, the Indian father confessed and also said that, upon being released, he would also kill his daughter and her lover.
