Two Indian students have died in a horrific incident at a Scottish beauty spot.
Rescue teams were called to the Linn of Tummel near Blair of Atholl, Perthshire, on the night of April 17, 2024.
It was reported that four friends, all students at Dundee University, were trekking when two of the men fell into the water and drowned.
The two other students called the emergency services.
Police, fire and ambulance services rushed to the scene.
Firefighters in two rescue boats searched the area along with police as they looked for the men.
Later, the bodies of the men were hauled from the water. It is believed that the search lasted around two hours.
Police have now launched a probe into the tragedy but it is thought there are no suspicious circumstances.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7 pm on Wednesday, 17 April, we received a report of two men, aged 22 and 26 years, in the water at the Linn of Tummel waterfall near Blair Atholl.
“Emergency services attended and following searches in the area, the bodies of two men were recovered from the water.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances however there would not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding these deaths.
“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said:
“We were in attendance at a water rescue incident at the Linn of Tummel.
“Police and ambulance crews were also requested. The crew left at 9:07 pm and handed over to the police.
“Two boat teams and two appliances were present.
The students have been identified as Jitendranath ‘Jitu’ Karuturi and Chanhakya Bolisetti.
They were understood to have been trying to take a picture of the beauty spot when they fell into the water.
They were studying for a master’s degree in data science and engineering.
A spokesperson for the Indian High Commission in London said:
“Two Indian students hailing from Andhra Pradesh drowned in an unfortunate incident Wednesday evening and their bodies were found a little downstream.
“The Consulate General of India has been in touch with the families of the students and a consular official has met the relative of one of the students who lives in the UK.
“The University of Dundee has assured of all help.
“The post-mortem is expected to take place on 19 April and thereafter procedures for repatriating bodies to India will be done.”
Run by the National Trust, the Linn of Tummel is a popular spot with tourists.
