"her father fixed her marriage with a villager. She refused"
Indian father Rajkumar Chaurasia, aged 55, of Ghatkopar, Mumbai, was arrested for allegedly stabbing his pregnant daughter to death.
Twenty-year-old Minakshi Chaurasia was found dead on the side of a road near her home. She was four-months pregnant at the time.
The victim was spotted by rickshaw drivers at around 7 am on July 14, 2019. She was found with stab wounds to her neck.
A police case was registered against an unidentified suspect.
Minakshi’s husband, Brijesh, said that she left her home the day before, saying she was going to the hospital for a check-up.
Brijesh stated that he did not realise his wife never returned home until someone told him that a woman looking like his wife was found dead.
Minakshi was identified and her husband said they had only been married for seven months.
He said: “We eloped and tied the knot at the beginning of this year. Soon after marriage, she got pregnant.”
DCP Akhilesh Singh explained: “We were told she and her husband Brijesh had eloped to Satna in Madhya Pradesh in February, where they had a court marriage.
“She was supposed to marry a Virar man selected by her father. Preparations had been made, including printing cards.”
Police questioned locals and learnt that Minakshi met with her father after visiting the hospital.
It was reported that the couple had an altercation with Chaurasia which led to him allegedly telling them to never return to the village.
A police officer said: “When she was living in the village two years ago, her father fixed her marriage with a villager. She refused, saying she wanted to move to Mumbai and get married there.
“The family brought her to Mumbai and fixed her marriage.
“But she eloped with Brijesh, after which a kidnapping case was registered by the family with the Matunga Police.”
DCP Singh explained that the elope humiliated the Indian father. Though he eventually forgave them, he told her that she could never visit the village.
However, they told him that they planned to visit the village due to a festival. A police official explained:
“Brijesh and his family are part of the festivities in the village, and he goes there every year.
“He couldn’t have left his pregnant wife alone in Mumbai. So, they decided to go together, which angered Rajkumar.”
According to the Mumbai Mirror, Minakshi argued with her father over the phone after which he asked her to meet him.
During questioning, the suspect confessed to stabbing his daughter. An officer said:
“He told us that when they met, she bent to touch his feet.
“At this moment, Rajkumar hit her on the back of her head and neck.
“The wounds on the neck were so deep and clean that they must have caused instant death.”
Following his admission, Rajkumar Chaurasia was booked under the section of murder of the Indian Penal Code. He was remanded in custody.
