A police investigation is underway after an Indian father strangled his 17-year-old daughter when he found out she was pregnant.
It was reported that he killed her in her sleep as she had become pregnant after she was allegedly raped.
The shocking honour killing happened in the village of Mantoli in Uttarakhand.
According to police, the unnamed man committed the murder to preserve the “family honour”.
The girl lived with her grandparents. They had taken her to hospital where doctors told them that she was pregnant.
When they informed the father, he was enraged. He turned up at the house, however, he left shortly after.
The Indian father returned to the house at 5 am where he strangled his daughter to death as she slept.
Villagers heard about the girl’s death but the man claimed that she had taken her own life and that he had already buried her. He later fled the village.
Circle Officer Suneeta said: “We had been informed by the hospital on Tuesday that a teenage girl was pregnant.
“Therefore, it could be a case under the POSCO Act. However, when we enquired the next day, we found out the girl was already dead and buried.”
On July 9, 2020, officers exhumed the body and spoke to the grandparents.
They told officers that she had been raped and had complained of stomach pains. When they took her to the hospital, doctors revealed that she was pregnant.
CO Suneeta added:
“We have taken the DNA sample of the foetus, and are investigating who raped the girl.”
“The investigation is on and the culprits will be caught soon.”
Officers are currently searching for the alleged rapist as well as her father, both remain on the run.
Unfortunately, honour killings continue in India and Pakistan.
In one case, five family members and a neighbour were arrested for killing the daughter over her relationship with a boy.
They allegedly did not approve of Krishna’s boyfriend, therefore, they committed this act of honour killing.
The incident came to light when a local said that a girl had died under strange circumstances and the family was preparing to cremate her.
When police reached the area and questioned the family, Parkash claimed that his sister had gone missing at approximately 12:15 am and was found dead on the side of a road.
When a post-mortem was conducted, the injuries suggested that the girl had been tortured before being strangled to death.
After the family were not able to explain why they did not inform the police of her death, they were arrested.
