Police have arrested a pregnant Indian woman after she allegedly killed her lover’s young daughter. Identified as 30-year-old Asha, she reportedly became angry over an inheritance row with her lover and carried out the murder.

The incident took place on the evening of the 12th November 2017. Asha was alone with the four-year-old girl in her and her lover’s house in Kundrathur. Located on the outskirts of Chennai in India.

After an argument over property with her lover Dharmalingam, Asha took it out on his daughter in a jealous rage. Police claim she had forced the four-year-old’s head into a bucket, filled with water and allegedly killed her.

The 30-year-old pregnant woman is carrying Dharmalingam’s child. A police officer revealed that he told Asha that their unborn child wouldn’t receive any inheritance from him.

Instead, his four-year-old child would inherit all of his property. The officer suggested this influenced Asha to carry out the murder, saying:

“Angered by this, on Sunday when Asha and the child were alone at home, she allegedly plunged the child’s head into a bucket full of water and killed her.”

While the woman and child remained alone at the house, Dharmalingam had gone to visit a client. He returned to the property roughly around 7pm and found the four-year-old unconscious. Together with his estranged partner, named Jayanthi, they took the child to the hospital.

However, medical staff pronounced her dead upon arrival.

Reports add that Dharmalingam and Jayanthi separated two years ago after five years of marriage. While their four-year-old stayed with her mother, she would visit her father on weekends.

Asha, also divorced, had an older, nine-year-old son from the marriage who lived with her and her lover. However, police added that she sent him away on the night of the incident. An officer explained:

“On Sunday, she sent her son with her brother, while Dharmalingam had gone out and his father to the temple, when the incident was reported.”

This shocking incident has some similarity to a case reported on 9th November. A neighbour had reportedly killed a four-year-old girl, using a similar method to murder the young child as Asha.

With the pregnant woman arrested, police will continue with their investigation.
