three of the victims were poisoned while another was smothered.
Police have said that a family was poisoned by the daughter-in-law before she committed suicide. The incident happened in Etah, Uttar Pradesh.
The five family members were found dead at their home on April 25, 2020.
News of their deaths sent shockwaves across Uttar Pradesh, even leading to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath calling for justice.
Now, police have said that they know what happened.
It was revealed that Divya Pachauri, the daughter-in-law of the household, killed her father-in-law, sister and son by lacing their food with a poisonous substance. She smothered her other son to death.
Afterwards, Divya took her own life by slashing her wrists.
The matter came to light when locals noticed a strong smell coming from the house. When they went to check, no one answered and the door was locked from the inside.
They informed the police and officers arrived at the scene.
Cutters were used to break open the metal door. Officers found the bodies of Rajeshwar Pachauri, aged 65, Divya, her sister Bulbul, aged 25, and her sons Aarush and Chhotu.
The police initially suspected that it was suicide but SSP Sunil Kumar Singh revealed that the bodies were found lying separately. He also said that foam and blood were seen coming out of the children’s mouths.
Injury marks were also found around Bulbul’s neck.
An empty bottle of toilet bleach, sulfas tablets and razor blades were recovered.
The bodies were sent for a post-mortem while a sample of milk was sent for forensic testing.
The initial investigation found no signs of forced entry or exit.
SSP Singh stated that the post-mortem report revealed that three of the victims were poisoned while another was smothered.
It also confirmed that Divya slashed her wrists.
According to SSP Singh, Divya had not eaten for a couple of days due to a domestic dispute as well as feeling depressed.
As a result, she served food which had been laced with sulfas to her family, killing them. She strangled her baby son to death before using the razor blades to take her own life.
The investigation is ongoing because the police do not know why she decided to kill her family and herself.
They are waiting for Divya’s husband Diwakar Pachauri to return to Etah so that they can question him.
Diwakar works for a pharmaceutical company in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. He had been in the state working when the incident came to light.
