Kanaka Raju – the iconic enthusiast of Gussadi – tragically passed away on October 25, 2024.
Raju was 83 years old and died due to age-related issues.
He hailed from the Marlavai Village in Jainoor, which is in the Komaram Bheem Asifabad district.
Kanaka Raju had been teaching Gussadi for over four decades, and in 1981, he performed in the Republic Day parade.
Condolences for Raju poured out on social media.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote: “Saddened by the passing of Shri Kanaka Raju Ji, a prolific dancer and cultural icon.
“His rich contribution to preserving Gussadi dance will always motivate the coming generations.
“His dedication and passion ensured that important aspects of cultural heritage can flourish in their authentic form.
“Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Another user wrote: “Deeply saddened by the loss of Shri Kanaka Raju Ji, a true cultural ambassador.
“His selfless contribution to preserving Gussadi dance has left an indelible mark on our cultural landscape, inspiring generations with his passion and dedication.
“Condolences to his loved ones in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”
A third person said: “It is with great sorrow that I express my condolences on the passing of Shri Kanaka Raju Ji, a distinguished dancer and cultural icon.
“His unwavering dedication to preserving Gussadi dance has left an indelible mark on our cultural landscape.
“His passion and commitment will continue to inspire future generations, ensuring that our rich heritage remains vibrant and authentic.
“My deepest sympathies to his family and all who cherished him. Om Shanti.”
The Gussadi dance is performed during the Dandari festival which is celebrated for 20 days surrounding Diwali.
The performers wear headgear which encompasses over 10,000 peacock feathers.
They drape animal skin around them during the dance.
In 2021, Kanaka Raju received the Padma Shri for his contributions to Indian dance.
Sharing his reaction to the award, Raju said: “Some officials had come to my home asking me to give my details.
“I asked them, ‘Did something [wrong] happen?’
“I was fretting. They tried telling me that it was for some award purpose and I did not understand.
“Everyone is happy about it, so even I am happy. I am yet to make sense of it.”
