"What a heart-wrenching loss!"
On November 7, 2025, Zarine Khan, the first wife of Sanjay Khan, passed away. She was 81 years old.
Zarine and Sanjay married in 1966 and had four children together.
Their wedding was attended by the likes of Dharmendra, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, and Meena Kumari.
Their kids included the actor Zayed Khan and Sussanne Khan.
In 2000, Sussanne married Hrithik Roshan, with whom she had two sons. The couple divorced in 2014.
Before marrying Sanjay, Zarine Khan briefly worked as an actress in Bollywood.
She starred with Dev Anand in Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963) and with Balraj Sahni in Ek Phool Do Mali (1969).
After retiring from acting, Zarine became an interior designer and published a cookbook called Family Secret.
While he was still married to Zarine, Sanjay married Zeenat Aman in 1978. The marriage was annulled in 1979.
His marriage to Zeenat was shrouded in controversy. Zeenat alleged that Sanjay beat her badly in front of his friends.
It is rumoured that it was this beating that led Zeenat to have suffered permanent damage to her right eye.
Zarine was reportedly heartbroken at her husband’s new acquisition.
She said in an interview: “I threw a tantrum and gave him an ultimatum that I’d walk out.
“That’s when things returned to normalcy. Maybe it was just ‘a mad wind’ that blew over.”
At her funeral, several Bollywood celebrities paid their respects to Zarine Khan.
Those who visited her residence included Hrithik Roshan, Jaya Bachchan, and Jackie Shroff.
Hrithik’s girlfriend, Saba Azad, also attended the last rites.
Sussanne’s partner, Arslan Gori, was also seen at the funeral.
Many stars also condoled Zarine’s death on social media.
Posting on her Instagram Story, Priyanka Chopra Jonas said: “Will always remember you with the greatest joy and incredible energy.
“You will be very missed, Zarine Aunty.”
Kajol added: “What a heart-wrenching loss! Shocked and saddened.
“Deepest condolences and prayers to the whole family.”
When Hrithik and Sussanne divorced, Zarine shared that she still shared a warm bond with her former son-in-law.
She said: “When Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai had not been released, Sussanne pledged a vow of abstaining from sweets for Hrithik’s success.
“Hrithik honoured his commitment to her and married her soon after the release.
“A wild wind may come and go, but it will never blow their home away.
“He is still like a son to me. The divorce has no bearing on our relationship.
“We have been friends for years. Hrithik is the father of my grandchildren, and that bond lasts for life.”
