Clubs will share a prize pool worth £774 million
Some of the biggest clubs in world football are heading to the United States for the revamped FIFA Club World Cup 2025, which kicks off this weekend.
Billed by FIFA as its new “prime club competition”, the tournament has been expanded to include 32 teams from across the six continental confederations.
It’s the brainchild of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who has overseen major structural changes for the 2025 edition.
The new format brings together top sides from every corner of the globe.
Premier League giants Manchester City and Chelsea will feature alongside European heavyweights such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.
They’ll face teams like Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia, Boca Juniors of Argentina and Auckland City from New Zealand.
Matches will be played in 12 stadiums across the US, including New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium and the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles.
The group stages will see eight groups of four teams, with the top two in each group progressing to the knockouts.
The tournament comes with serious financial incentives.
Clubs will share a prize pool worth £774 million, with the winners set to earn up to £97 million.
UK fans should prepare for some late nights. The first match kicks off at 1 am when Egyptian giants Al Ahly take on Inter Miami in Florida’s Hard Rock Stadium.
