A fashion show organised at Karachi’s Iqra University has ignited online backlash after videos of the event went viral.

The event was named ‘Iqra University Fashion Odyssey 2024’.

It showcased the creative designs of the university’s students, under the auspices of the Asian Institute of Fashion Design and Iqra University.

The grand show featured vibrant collections presented by models on the ramp, with prominent fashion icons attending the evening.

The university promoted the event on social media, including a video posted on Facebook with the caption:

“This is not just a show but a celebration of vision, talent, and innovation. The fashion odyssey is here, and the journey begins now.”

However, the event faced intense criticism online.

Many social media users expressed outrage over what they deemed inappropriate attire being showcased in an educational setting.

One user remarked: “First of all, no one will wear these frivolous clothes. Secondly, the administrators should be ashamed.

“They are spreading this obscenity in the name of Iqra University.”

Another called for severe action, saying: “Iqra University should be banned.”

The comments section became a platform for public grief and anger, with many questioning the role of educational institutions.

Many argued that universities should focus on providing quality education rather than hosting events that allegedly promote indecency and detract from academic purposes.

One recurring sentiment was that such activities contribute to misconceptions among the youth about the purpose of education.

This is not the first time a controversy surrounding events at educational institutions in Pakistan has emerged.

In recent months, social media has been flooded with videos showing dance and music performances in universities.

This includes the celebration of non-religious festivals.

These incidents have sparked debates about the evolving role of universities in society and whether such events align with cultural and educational values.

In one example, the chancellor of Karachi’s Jinnah University for Women faced backlash after hosting his daughter’s wedding on the university’s campus.

Videos showed the campus adorned with elaborate decorations, including lights and flowers, and a dance floor where Bollywood songs were performed.

Similarly, a mehndi event at the same university on November 7, 2024, featured dances and festive arrangements, further fuelling the criticism.

The debate has raised concerns over the growing prevalence of such events in academic settings.

Defenders of such events cite the importance of fostering creativity and holistic development in students.

However, the controversy surrounding Iqra University’s fashion show and similar events continues to spark heated discussions across Pakistan.
