A fashion show held in Gulmarg during Ramadan has sparked intense backlash across Jammu and Kashmir.

It has drawn criticism from religious leaders, political figures and the general public.

The event featured models walking the ramp in the scenic ski town and wearing bold outfits, with some models scantily-dressed.

Former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his strong disapproval, calling it a blatant disregard for Kashmiri traditions, particularly during Ramadan.

He stated that the images and videos circulating online reflect a deep insensitivity toward the region’s cultural and religious values.

In response to the controversy, he has ordered a high-level investigation and demanded a report within 24 hours.

He also warned that strict action would be taken against the event organisers.

Prominent religious leader and Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also criticised the fashion show.

He described it as shameful and immoral. He asserted that such an event goes against Kashmir’s deep-rooted traditions.

Farooq insisted that those responsible must be held accountable for disregarding religious and cultural sensitivities.

The outrage quickly spread to social media, with platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram flooded with criticism.

Many users accused the administration of promoting Western influences at the expense of Kashmiri heritage.

Some individuals called for immediate action against those involved, while others emphasised the need to protect Kashmiri customs from external influences.

Fashion designers Shivan and Narresh, who organised the event, have since issued an apology.

In a statement posted on social media, they expressed regret for any offence caused by the show’s timing.

Shivan and Narresh, a luxury brand that specialises in holiday wear, said in a statement that it deeply regretted the hurt caused by the event in Gulmarg.

A statement read:

“We deeply regret any hurt caused by our recent presentation in Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramadan.”

“Our sole intention was to celebrate creativity and the ski & apres-ski lifestyle, without any desire to offend anyone or any religious sentiments.

“Respect for all cultures and traditions is at our heart, and we acknowledge the concerns raised.

“We sincerely apologise for any unintended discomfort and appreciate the feedback from our community. We remain committed to being more mindful and respectful.”

Despite the apology, the controversy surrounding the fashion show continues to fuel debate over cultural preservation and the role of modern influences.
